Straum Expedition Brings a Norwegian Edge to the Titanium Tool Watch

Straum has made its name with watches that translate Norwegian landscapes into textured, atmospheric dials.

The Expedition shifts that idea into something more functional, bringing the brand’s nature-led identity into a compact titanium tool watch made for cold, wet and abrasive conditions.

It’s still recognisably Straum, but the priorities have changed from dial drama alone to durability, legibility and wearability outdoors.

A tougher titanium case for cold terrain

The Expedition takes Straum’s compact titanium format in a more protective direction.

Its case measures 38.2mm across and 11mm thick, trimming the diameter slightly from the Jan Mayen Titanium while adding a more purposeful profile.

The most obvious functional change is the stepped bezel.

Rather than leaving a broad flat upper surface exposed, the new shape reduces the area most vulnerable to scratches and helps push knocks away from the crystal.

The crown has also grown, which matters more than it might sound on a watch intended for outdoor use.

A larger screw-down crown is easier to grip with cold fingers or gloves, especially when setting the time away from the comfort of a warm room.

Straum’s use of grade 5 titanium also makes sense in this context.

It’s lighter than steel, but it also has lower thermal conductivity, so it doesn’t feel as sharply cold against the skin when temperatures drop.

A dial layout made for quick reading

The Expedition dial moves away from Straum’s more artistic landscape-led textures and leans into clarity.

A 60-minute scale runs around the flange, while oversized hour markers frame the main display.

The 12, 3, 6 and 9 positions use Arabic numerals, with a 24-hour scale sitting inside them for added utility.

A date window is positioned above 6 o’clock, with the numerals picked out in Fluor Orange for contrast.

Three dial versions are offered.

The Midnight Blue Launch Edition has a blue dial, nickel-plated hands and luminous hour markers, and is limited to 200 pieces.

The two regular models are Titanium Gray and White Lume.

The latter reverses the usual approach with a fully luminous dial and black hour markers, giving it the most technical personality of the trio.

All three versions use a Fluor Orange-tipped lollipop seconds hand, a small but effective detail that keeps the watch visually alert.

An engraved caseback and a 68-hour movement

The Expedition uses a solid titanium caseback, a logical choice for a watch with tool-watch ambitions.

Straum hasn’t left it plain.

The back is engraved with a lone hiker looking across a Norwegian landscape beneath a starry sky, with the brand’s S mark taking the place of the moon.

Inside is the La Joux-Perret G100 automatic calibre.

It offers hours, minutes, seconds and date, along with a 68-hour power reserve that gives the watch enough running time to sit for a weekend without immediately needing attention.

The G100 is the date-equipped counterpart to the G101 used in the Jan Mayen, so existing Straum collectors will find the movement family familiar.

The Expedition doesn’t abandon Straum’s fascination with Norwegian nature, but it changes the way that idea is expressed.

For buyers who liked the brand’s compact proportions and Nordic character but wanted something more practical for daily wear and the outdoors, this is the most direct Straum yet.
