Doxa Puts the SUB 300 Clive Cussler Edition in Grade 5 Titanium

Doxa’s SUB 300 has always carried more than its share of dive-watch folklore.

The new SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler takes that familiar 1967-born silhouette and gives it a lighter, more technical edge in grade 5 titanium, while keeping the compact wrist presence and old-school charm that define the line.

It’s also the fourth Doxa limited edition connected to Clive Cussler and NUMA, the marine exploration organisation he founded in 1979.

The choice of the SUB 300 platform matters here.

Rather than using the chunkier SUB 300T or the modern SUB 300 Beta, Doxa has gone back to the vintage-inspired form that most directly echoes the original SUB 300 introduced in 1967.

On paper, the 42.5mm diameter sounds broad, but the 45mm lug-to-lug measurement keeps the watch relatively contained on the wrist.

The box-shaped sapphire crystal adds some height, bringing total thickness to 13.4mm, while giving the watch the raised profile associated with old plexiglass crystals.

The case keeps its 300-metre water resistance and omits a helium escape valve, which gives this version a cleaner side profile than some of Doxa’s more modern dive models.

For Cussler fans, the connection is direct and meaningful.

The American novelist and underwater explorer wrote more than 85 books, founded NUMA, and helped put Doxa into popular imagination through Dirk Pitt, the adventure hero often associated with an orange-dial Doxa dive watch.

Grade 5 titanium changes the feel without changing the formula

The defining shift is the use of grade 5 titanium for the case, crown, bezel and caseback.

It makes the SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler noticeably lighter than a comparable steel diver, but Doxa hasn’t softened the familiar visual language.

The case still mixes circular brushing across the upper surfaces with polished flanks, preserving the recognisable SUB 300 stance.

Around the crystal sits Doxa’s signature shark-tooth unidirectional bezel, with a dual scale that combines a 60-minute timing track and a no-decompression scale with depth indications.

The polished and brushed bezel surfaces also carry the familiar contrast of orange and black markings.

The titanium story continues on the dial, which is where this edition feels most distinct.

Doxa uses two superimposed grade 5 titanium layers to create a sandwich-style construction, with the upper sandblasted dial laser-cut to reveal the luminous layer underneath.

The hour markers, central index, side cut-outs, date aperture and minute track all use this layered treatment, adding more depth than the standard SUB 300 dial layout.

The hands remain pure Doxa, with blackened hour and seconds hands joined by an oversized orange minute hand for immediate legibility underwater.

The date disc also carries a quiet tribute, with 15, 7 and 31 printed in Doxa orange to mark Clive Cussler’s birth date.

A chronometer movement with NUMA on the caseback

Inside is the Sellita SW200-1 in COSC-certified chronometer specification.

The automatic movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses 26 jewels and offers a 38-hour power reserve.

Its functions are kept practical, with hours, minutes, hacking seconds and date.

The solid caseback is engraved with the NUMA emblem, the chronometer certification and the individual number for each watch.

Doxa fits the model on a black Dive Flex rubber strap with a tropical-style ventilated pattern and a titanium pin buckle.

Production is limited to 300 numbered pieces, and part of the proceeds will support NUMA’s work in locating and preserving historic shipwrecks.

It simply gives one of the brand’s most enduring shapes a lighter case, a more architectural dial and a Cussler connection that feels earned rather than decorative.
