Louis Vuitton’s latest Escale pocket watch takes the Maison’s travel language into colder, stranger territory.
The Escale en Alaska is a unique piece built around Margerie Glacier, the Northern Lights and a miniature cast of Arctic wildlife, but the real story is how much mechanical theatre has been packed into a 50mm white-gold case.
It combines a minute repeater, a one-minute tourbillon and an elaborate jacquemart automaton, making it one of the most technically ambitious creations yet from La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.

A frozen landscape built for motion
The Escale en Alaska belongs to Louis Vuitton’s Escales Autour du Monde series, a line of unique pocket watches that treats travel as a canvas for high watchmaking and decorative craft.
Here, the scene is Alaska’s Margerie Glacier under green auroras, rendered as a small mechanical stage rather than a static dial.
A blue whale rises from the water, an orca opens its mouth to show white-gold teeth and penguins move across the ice.

An iceberg drifts through the composition, Louis Vuitton trunks open to reveal Monogram flowers and a gold compass rose turns at 12 o’clock.
The night sky gets its own flourish through a 0.05-carat LV Monogram Star-cut diamond, which travels like a shooting star above the glacier.
In total, the automaton drives nine animations and 17 moving elements, leaving the front of the watch entirely dedicated to spectacle.

Enamel, engraving and gem-setting on a miniature scale
The front dial is made by La Fabrique des Arts and combines Grand Feu champlevé, cloisonné and miniature enamel with extensive hand engraving.
The palette alone gives a sense of the work involved, with 32 enamel colours selected over several weeks and fixed through more than 35 firings.
That process gives the glacier its layered blues, whites and greens, while the surrounding casework continues the Arctic theme with hand-engraved motifs on the case sides.

The bezel is set with baguette-cut coloured sapphires, diamonds and tourmalines, arranged to echo the frozen landscape and aurora-lit sky.
It’s a watch that uses gem-setting for atmosphere rather than simple brightness, which suits the Escale idea particularly well.
The LFT AU14.03 calibre takes centre stage
Time is shown on the reverse of the watch by skeletonised blued hands, a practical decision that keeps the animated scene free from interruption.

Inside is the manually wound LFT AU14.03 calibre, developed and assembled by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton as a pocket-watch movement.
The calibre has 751 components and 81 jewels, combining the minute repeater, one-minute tourbillon and jacquemart animation system in a single construction.
It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers an eight-day power reserve, an impressive figure considering the scale of the complication stack.

The finishing is pitched at the same level as the mechanics, with hand-bevelled interior angles, engraved bridges, polished steel components, gold wheels, gold chatons and Côtes de Genève.

The Escale en Alaska sits at the rare end of Louis Vuitton watchmaking, where travel, trunk-making heritage and serious mechanical craft meet in one object.
For collectors drawn to automata, minute repeaters and decorative métiers d’art, it’s less a pocket watch for daily use than a portable theatre of everything La Fabrique du Temps can do.
