Nomos Gives the Tangente Update a Sharper 38.5mm Case

Nomos Glashütte has brought one of its cleverest complications into a more wearable Tangente format.

The Tangente Neomatik 38 Update takes the brand’s peripheral ring date and places it inside a 38.5mm stainless steel case, giving the watch a cleaner dress-watch presence than the larger 41mm version.

It’s a measured release rather than a loud one, but for many Nomos collectors, that’s precisely the point.

A smaller Update for the Tangente

The Tangente has been central to Nomos since the brand’s early 1990s collection, sitting alongside the Orion, Ludwig and Tetra as one of its defining designs.

Its appeal has always come from restraint, with a flat round case, narrow bezel, angular lugs and typography tied to early German modernist dial design.

The Update version added a more technical layer to that formula in 2018, replacing a conventional date aperture with a date display around the edge of the dial.

The challenge was size.

The DUW 6101 movement used for the complication was wide, which kept the first Tangente Update in a larger 40.5mm case that wore even broader because of the model’s long, sharp lugs.

This new 38.5mm version answers that criticism directly.

Nomos has rescaled the outer date ring to bring the movement diameter down to 34mm while preserving the calibre’s 3.6mm height.

The result is a Tangente Update that measures 7.4mm thick and 47.3mm lug to lug, making the complication feel much more at home in a dress-leaning watch.

The peripheral date stays clean and practical

The most interesting part of the watch remains the date display.

Rather than cutting a window into the dial, Nomos uses a ring of date numerals around the perimeter, with red indicators framing the current day through small cutouts.

It’s an unusually neat solution because it shows the whole month without placing a central pointer hand or disrupting the symmetry of the dial.

The display also suits the Tangente’s graphic personality, where every line and numeral tends to matter.

There’s a small playful detail too, with the date numerals inverted from the 9th to the 22nd of the month.

That little shift breaks the otherwise strict layout without turning the watch into something decorative for its own sake.

Silver and forest green dials

Nomos is offering the Tangente Neomatik 38 Update in two stainless steel references.

The silver-plated dial is the more familiar option, pairing black markings with slim baton hands and a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock.

The forest-green version is the fresher of the two, using silver-coloured markers, indices and inscriptions with rhodium-plated hands and white Arabic numerals for the date ring.

Both versions include the gold-toned “neomatik” signature at 12 o’clock and a recessed, snailed small seconds counter.

Each watch is fitted to a 19mm black Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan strap with a stainless steel Nomos winged pin buckle.

The strap choice keeps the watch within Nomos’ familiar dress-casual register, though the slimmer case gives this Update a noticeably more formal stance than the larger model.

Inside the DUW 6101 calibre

The Tangente Neomatik 38 Update is powered by the in-house DUW 6101 automatic movement.

Its date mechanism is integrated into the mainplate rather than stacked on top, which helps explain the calibre’s thin 3.6mm construction.

The movement offers bidirectional winding and a bidirectional quick-set date, with a 90-minute period between 11:15 and 12:45 when adjustment should be avoided.

It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and is regulated in six positions.

Finishing is in keeping with Nomos’ Glashütte identity, with a three-quarter plate, Glashütte ribbing, blued screws and gold lettering visible through the sapphire caseback.
