Grøne Horologium Small Seconds Arrives in Playful Orange and Polished Salmon

Grøne is beginning to show exactly what Bart and Tim Grönefeld had in mind when they created a second, more attainable watch label.

The new Horologium Small Seconds keeps the proportions and finishing language tidy, but gives buyers a choice between a Dutch-orange wink and a calmer salmon-dial alternative.

It’s still a limited watch, but it sits in a very different world from the near-unobtainable Grönefeld pieces that made the brothers famous.

Grøne launched in 2024 as a separate project from Bart and Tim Grönefeld, giving the Dutch watchmakers room to produce watches in larger numbers and at a less rarefied price point.

That distinction matters, because Grönefeld watches have become effectively inaccessible to many collectors, with new orders closed for years.

The Horologium Small Seconds continues that idea without trying to mimic the brothers’ higher-end work too literally.

Its Latin name simply means clock, a term used in more than one corner of watchmaking, and this model has no connection to the UK assembly workshop of the same name.

Two dial personalities for the Horologium

The case measures 39mm across and 10mm thick, putting it in the sweet spot for a contemporary dress watch that doesn’t feel overly formal.

Grøne has updated the case with a satin-brushed central band, polished bezel and polished caseback, creating more definition across a compact steel profile.

The lugs have also been reshaped with a downward curve intended to sit more naturally on the wrist.

The bolder of the two editions is Something Quirky, with a matte orange dial and bright blue hands.

It’s the unmistakably Dutch choice, and the sapphire caseback carries the inscription “Zoals het klokje thuis tikt, tikt het nergens”, a Dutch phrase broadly meaning Home Sweet Home.

Something Classic takes the same layout in a quieter direction, pairing a salmon sunray dial with dark blue hands and a clear sapphire back.

Both versions use silver small seconds subdials, angular hour markers and alpha hour and minute hands.

A raised central ring gives the dial a sector-like structure, adding enough geometry to keep the watch from feeling too nostalgic.

A customised La Joux-Perret calibre

Inside is a manual-winding La Joux-Perret movement, though Grøne has not named the exact calibre reference.

The movement is fitted with a Grøne-engraved plate finished with Côtes de Genève, which hides much of the architecture and gives the back a more coherent branded look.

The functions remain deliberately simple, with hours, minutes and small seconds.

That restraint suits the watch, especially at a price where the appeal is less about complication and more about proportion, colour and a recognisable maker’s touch.
