Gerald Charles Brings Hand-Hammered Dials to the Masterlink Atelier Edition

Gerald Charles has always lived in the more eccentric corner of luxury sports watch design, and that’s precisely its appeal.

The new Masterlink Atelier Edition sharpens that identity with hand-hammered maillechort dials, bringing a more artisanal surface to the brand’s stainless steel integrated bracelet watch.

It’s a restrained release, but not a quiet one, with three dial tones and just 25 pieces planned in each version.

Gerald Charles was founded by Gérald Genta in 2000, and the Masterlink continues the brand’s reliance on the Maestro case architecture that came from his later creative period.

Rather than leaning on a conventional round or octagonal sports-watch profile, the Masterlink uses a 38mm by 38mm square foundation softened by curved, asymmetrical lines.

The most recognisable detail remains the arcing lower portion of the bezel, a shape that gives the case its distinctive expression without turning it into a novelty object.

At 7.99mm thick, the stainless steel case keeps the watch slim, while a screw-down crown helps secure a 100-metre water-resistance rating.

The bracelet is an important part of the design rather than an attachment after the fact.

Its lower links echo the curve at 6 o’clock before gradually straightening, while the upper links follow the flatter edge of the bezel.

With no visible screws, polished and satin-brushed surfaces, and a folding clasp with push pieces, the watch keeps a clean profile on the wrist.

Hand-hammered maillechort in three tones

The Atelier Edition’s main change is the dial, which is made from maillechort, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc often known as German silver.

Artisans in the Gerald Charles Geneva atelier hammer each dial by hand, using controlled strikes to create an uneven surface that catches light in different directions.

It’s a more tactile execution than a stamped texture, and the slight variations are part of the appeal.

Gerald Charles offers the dial in golden rose, golden yellow and rhodium, each without hour markers so the hammered finish remains uninterrupted.

The dial furniture is kept almost minimal, limited to blue baton hour and minute hands with Super-LumiNova inlays and a Gerald Charles Geneva appliqué at noon.

The ultra-thin GCA 1000 movement

Inside the Masterlink Atelier Edition is the automatic GCA 1000, a proprietary calibre developed for Gerald Charles with Vaucher Manufacture Fleurier.

The movement measures 2.67mm thick and uses an off-centred unidirectional micro-rotor, helping preserve the slim case profile.

It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3Hz, and delivers a 50-hour power reserve.

The movement is visible through a sapphire caseback, giving the watch a technical counterpoint to the hand-worked dial.

The Masterlink Atelier Edition works because the craft element doesn’t fight the case design.

It gives Gerald Charles collectors a more intimate version of the Masterlink, one where the appeal is less about overt complication and more about shape, surface and the hand of the maker.
