TAG Heuer Brings the Monza Into Forged Carbon for Its 50th Year

TAG Heuer’s Monza has always sat close to the asphalt, with a name that carries more motorsport weight than most chronographs need to explain.

For its 50th anniversary, the watch returns in a sharply modern form, pairing a forged carbon case with the brand’s COSC-certified flyback chronograph calibre.

It’s not a nostalgic reissue so much as a contemporary Monza with the volume turned toward material innovation, race timing and limited-edition collectability.

The new Monza Flyback Chronograph takes the cushion-shaped silhouette of the contemporary model and dresses it in forged carbon, including the 42 mm case, fixed bezel and crown.

That material choice matters because forged carbon isn’t visually uniform.

Its marbled structure gives each watch a slightly different surface pattern, adding a technical texture that suits the Monza’s motorsport character without leaning on vintage cues too heavily.

The anniversary edition also arrives with clear historical context.

Heuer became Official Timekeeper of Scuderia Ferrari in 1971, creating one of the most important watch and Formula 1 links of the period.

After Niki Lauda won the 1975 Formula 1 World Championship with Ferrari, Heuer introduced the Monza in 1976 to commemorate the achievement.

This new edition was presented in connection with the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix at the Monza circuit, a fitting setting for a watch whose identity is tied so closely to racing culture.

The dial keeps the Monza’s instrument character intact

A domed sapphire crystal with double-sided anti-reflective treatment sits over a matte black dial, giving the watch a clean, purposeful look.

The chronograph layout places the 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and the running seconds display at 6 o’clock, while the angled date window at 9 o’clock keeps a recognisable detail from the modern Monza design language.

TAG Heuer has kept the palette tight, using black counters, white markings and red accents to create the kind of contrast expected from a racing chronograph.

The black flange carries both tachymeter and pulsometer scales, reinforcing the Monza as a timing instrument rather than a purely decorative anniversary piece.

White printed indexes and white lacquered hour and minute hands are treated with white Super-LumiNova, while the central chronograph seconds hand and subdial hands add further red and white highlights.

The dial carries TAG Heuer branding along with “MONZA”, “OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED CHRONOMETER” and “FLYBACK”, making the watch’s technical positioning explicit without crowding the design.

The TH20-12 calibre brings proper flyback functionality

Inside is the manufacture Calibre TH20-12, an automatic chronograph movement visible through the sapphire crystal case back.

The movement is COSC-certified and includes a flyback function, allowing the chronograph to be reset and restarted with a single press without first stopping the timing sequence.

It’s a useful complication in the context of motorsport timing, where back-to-back measurements are often the point.

The case back is made from Grade 2 titanium with a black DLC coating and is engraved with the individual number of each watch in the 500-piece edition.

Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, giving the watch a level of practicality that goes beyond weekend collector use.

A black perforated calfskin strap with red stitching completes the package, secured by a black DLC-coated Grade 2 titanium folding clasp with double safety push-buttons.
