Minerva The Unveiled Crownless marks a significant return for the Villeret manufacture, reviving the historic Minerva name on the dial while introducing a crown-free case architecture controlled by the bezel.
It is a watch that looks deceptively simple at first glance, but its real interest lies in how it turns one of watchmaking’s most familiar interactions into something new.
A crownless case with a practical purpose
The Unveiled Crownless uses a 41.5mm stainless steel case measuring 11.99mm thick, topped by an 18ct rose gold fluted bezel.
That bezel is not decorative alone: it is used to wind the mainspring and set the time, removing the need for a conventional crown and giving the case a clean, balanced profile.
A discreet lever integrated into the stainless steel frame of the sapphire caseback switches the bezel between winding and hand-setting modes.
Push the lever in and the bezel winds the movement; extend it and the same bezel adjusts the hours and minutes.
The idea has roots in Minerva’s long association with functional bezel-operated mechanisms, including aviation instruments and timing watches made for practical use rather than visual novelty.
A 1950s-inspired dial with Minerva back on the front
The dial takes its cues from a mid-century Minerva watch, using a restrained layout with the brand’s historic signature at the top and a recessed small seconds display at 6 o’clock.
An applied rose-gold-coated Arabic numeral at 12 anchors the dial, while faceted hour markers and golden Dauphine-style hands keep the watch firmly in dress-watch territory.
The opaline centre contrasts with the guilloché hour track, creating a dial that shifts subtly with the light rather than relying on heavy decoration.
The pairing of steel, rose gold and a semi-matte dark green alligator strap gives the watch a warmer character than a conventional stainless steel dress piece.
The new triple-folding deployant clasp includes a fine-adjustment system and is engraved with the historic Minerva arrow, a small but fitting detail for a watch built around the marque’s return.
Calibre M15.08 and the mechanics behind the bezel
Inside is the Minerva Manufacture Calibre M15.08, a hand-wound movement developed in-house in Villeret for this crownless architecture.
The movement runs at 18,000 vibrations per hour, or 2.5Hz, and offers an 80-hour power reserve from a manually wound construction.
Visible through the sapphire caseback, the calibre is composed of 139 components and 19 jewels, with German silver bridges plated with rhodium, polished bevels and Côtes de Genève finishing.
A free-sprung balance supports precision, while the regulator carries the Minerva arrow, connecting the mechanics directly to one of the manufacture’s most recognisable emblems.
Price, positioning and collector appeal
The Minerva The Unveiled Crownless is reference 137544 and is priced at £34,500.
Water resistance is rated to 3 ATM, or 30 metres, which suits its role as a refined mechanical object rather than a daily sports watch.
Presentation has been considered as part of the experience, with a natural walnut-veneer box, a hidden opening system, a steel plate engraved with the Villeret manufacture and RFV markings, and a latch bearing the coat of arms of Villeret.
This is not a watch for someone simply looking for a clean three-hander; it is for the collector who enjoys mechanical interaction, historic continuity and the discreet theatre of a watch that asks to be handled.
The Unveiled Crownless succeeds because its innovation is not loud: it removes the crown, restores symmetry and gives Minerva a memorable opening statement for its renewed life as a standalone haute horlogerie name.
