The Chanel J12 Superleggera Caliber 12.1 returns one of the brand’s most automotive-flavored watch names to the spotlight, this time as a three-hand ceramic sports watch rather than a chronograph.
At 42mm wide and 12.5mm thick, reference H11059 is a substantial J12, pairing matte black ceramic with black-coated steel and a hardened steel bezel insert for a more restrained take on the Superleggera idea.
A Superleggera Name With Chanel History
Superleggera translates from Italian as “super light,” but in car culture it points to Touring’s lightweight body-construction method, a term forever tied to elegant performance machinery.
Chanel first applied the name to the J12 in 2005 with a ceramic-and-aluminum chronograph, a watch that pushed the collection into a more technical, overtly motorsport-adjacent direction.
The 2026 J12 Superleggera is less literal about lightness, yet it keeps the performance mood through color, texture and cockpit-style dial details.
Matte Black Ceramic Meets Brushed Steel
The case is executed in matte black ceramic, with a black-coated steel bezel frame and a circular-brushed natural steel insert adding contrast without returning to the louder two-material look of the 2005 model.
The bracelet continues the theme with matte-finished outer links, vertically brushed ceramic center links and polished edges, giving the watch a more mechanical character than the standard glossy J12.
A screw-down crown with a matte black ceramic cabochon helps support 200 meters of water resistance, so this is not merely a styling exercise.
A Dashboard Dial, Not A Chronograph
The black-lacquered dial is the most expressive part of the watch, combining a circular-satin center with an azurage hour track, rhodium-plated numerals and a red-accented rehaut.
The elongated date display at 4 o’clock, marked by a red pointer, feels deliberately instrument-like, while the red arc running from 8 to 12 gives the dial the suggestion of a tachometer’s warning zone.
It is a risky design choice for a J12 because it leans into the car connection without the functional justification of a chronograph, but the mostly black execution keeps it from becoming costume-like.
Caliber 12.1 Gives The J12 Its Technical Backbone
Inside is Chanel’s automatic Caliber 12.1, a Kenissi-made movement visible through the sapphire case back and fitted with a black-coated rotor.
The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, has hacking seconds and manual winding, uses 27 jewels and delivers a practical 70-hour power reserve.
It is also COSC-certified, which matters here because the Superleggera name needs more than a few red accents to feel credible in a modern sports watch.
Price And Collector Appeal
The Chanel J12 Superleggera Caliber 12.1 is priced at €12,900, US$13,750 or £11,000, placing it well above many ceramic sports watches but below Chanel’s more complicated high-watchmaking pieces.
It will make the most sense for collectors who already appreciate the J12’s design language and want the collection’s sportier, more masculine edge without chasing a discontinued chronograph.
Is it truly “super light” in the old coachbuilding sense? Not exactly, but as a sharp, technically serious J12 with a confident automotive streak, the Superleggera name still has enough grip.
