Andersen Genève Gives the Communication 45 a Platinum and Blue Finish

Andersen Genève has a way of making complicated watches feel personal rather than theatrical.

The Communication 45 already carried the weight of the atelier’s worldtime history, but its new platinum and blue configuration gives the watch a cooler, more restrained character.

It’s still very much a collector’s piece, just one that speaks in a quieter register.

Svend Andersen’s name is inseparable from the worldtime complication, though reducing his career to that single specialty misses the broader point of his work.

A founding member of the AHCI and one of independent watchmaking’s more discreet figures, Andersen developed deep experience with Louis Cottier-style worldtimers during his years restoring complicated watches in Lucerne and later at Patek Philippe.

That background eventually led to Andersen Genève’s Communication 24 in 1990, the atelier’s formative worldtime watch.

The Communication 45 takes that lineage and pares it into a compact, vintage-leaning format, with a 38mm case and the traditional two-crown architecture associated with classic Cottier-style worldtimers.

In platinum, the design feels less nostalgic than the earlier yellow gold version, helped by the silvery city ring and blue accents across the dial.

Platinum casework without CNC shortcuts

The case is one of the most important details here, not just because it’s platinum, but because of how it’s made.

Marco Poluzzi’s workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds, owned by Andersen Genève since 2022, produces the 950 platinum case without CNC machining.

The soldered lugs blend teardrop and cow-horn cues, giving the watch an old-world profile without turning it into a pastiche.

At 8.95mm thick, the Communication 45 remains notably slim for an automatic worldtimer, and the polished case is fitted with sapphire crystals front and back with double-sided anti-reflective coating.

Water resistance is rated to 30 metres, which is entirely in keeping with a refined travel complication rather than a sports watch.

BlueGold, guilloché and three map choices

The dial is made from 21ct BlueGold, a material closely associated with Andersen Genève and used here in a light blue tone.

Its wave-form tapisserie guilloché pattern is cut using an authentic 19th-century machine, adding texture without overwhelming the worldtime display.

At the centre, the map is offered in three versions covering Asia, Europe or the Americas.

Each map is created by infilling the surface with a liquid lacquer of unalloyed gold, a small but telling detail that gives the dial its precious-metal depth.

The brushed silvery-white city ring keeps the layout crisp, while the 24-hour ring uses a blue section to distinguish night hours.

Openworked hands handle the local hours and minutes, leaving the dial’s cartographic and guilloché work visible.

A restored automatic calibre with an in-house worldtime module

Inside is a restored and re-decorated vintage A. Schild S.A. automatic base movement.

It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a 40-hour power reserve.

The movement is paired with the latest version of Andersen Genève’s in-house worldtime module, a development that traces back to the ultra-thin module Svend Andersen created in the late 1980s.

That module is central to the watch’s appeal, because it connects the modern Communication 45 directly to the atelier’s earliest worldtime work.

Through the caseback, the rotor continues the dial language with blue-toned 21ct BlueGold and the same tapisserie guilloché decoration.
