Tesla has added a new Supercharger safety function with a name that says exactly what it’s for.
Emergency Drive Away allows a Tesla driver to shift into Drive while the car is still connected to a charging cable, giving owners a way to leave quickly in a genuine emergency rather than first disconnecting the handle by hand.
It’s a rare feature because it deliberately breaks the normal charging routine, and Tesla is making clear that it isn’t intended as a convenience shortcut.

At a glance
- Tesla’s Emergency Drive Away lets a vehicle leave a Supercharger without manually unplugging first.
- The system releases the charging handle after the driver selects the on-screen “Activate” option.
- It is currently limited to US Superchargers and requires software update 2026.38.3.
A Supercharger escape function for genuine emergencies
In normal use, a Tesla remains locked into the charging process until the driver removes the Supercharger handle from the car.
Emergency Drive Away changes that sequence by allowing the vehicle to be put into Drive while it is still charging.
The process is not automatic or hidden in the background.

Drivers must choose the on-screen “Activate” option, after which the system releases the charging handle from the vehicle and allows the car to move away.
The use case is easy to understand, even if most owners will hopefully never need it.
A charging station can be an exposed place, especially late at night or in a remote location, and the ability to leave without stepping out of the car could matter in a threatening situation.

The damage warning is the important part
Tesla’s warning around the feature is unusually direct.
Using Emergency Drive Away will damage both the vehicle and the Supercharger equipment, so this is not a cleaner way to end a charging stop or avoid getting out in bad weather.
The company also cautions that deliberate misuse could lead to additional penalties.

That makes the feature less like a convenience update and more like a last-resort safety override, with consequences built into the decision.
For everyday charging, the correct process remains unchanged.
Finish the session, unlock or release the connector as normal, remove the handle, and return it to the stall before leaving.

Availability and software requirements
Emergency Drive Away is currently available only at Superchargers in the United States.
Owners will also need software update 2026.38.3 for the function to appear.
The rollout detail matters because Tesla features often depend on a combination of vehicle software, regional settings and charging infrastructure compatibility.
For now, drivers outside the US shouldn’t expect the same option to be present at their local Supercharger.

Emergency Drive Away is one of those Tesla updates that looks strange until the situation it’s meant for becomes obvious.
It’s not a feature owners should test for curiosity, but as an emergency measure, it adds another layer to the way Tesla thinks about charging, security and driver control.
