Mercedes-AMG has a habit of turning sensible Mercedes-Benz coupes into something much less polite, and the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung continues that tradition with intent.
This is a limited-run, wide-bodied CLE with a twin-turbo V8, serious chassis work and a cabin stripped of needless distraction.
For anyone who missed the old AMG formula of big power, muscular proportions and just enough menace, this one lands squarely in familiar territory.

At a glance
- Mercedes-AMG has created the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung as a 30-unit performance coupe built around a 646 hp V8.
- The car uses a 4.0-litre biturbo flat-plane crank V8, all-wheel drive, ceramic composite brakes and extensive carbon-fibre bodywork.
- Performance figures include 0 to 100 kph in 3.9 seconds, 0 to 200 kph in 11.4 seconds and a 314 kph top speed.
A CLE coupe with a much sharper AMG brief
The standard CLE already occupies an interesting place in the Mercedes-Benz line-up, effectively carrying the two-door roles once split across the C-Class and E-Class families.
In its regular forms, it’s a polished grand touring coupe with front-engine proportions and a choice of rear- or all-wheel-drive layouts, depending on variant.
The CLE 53 AMG sits at the upper end of the normal range with a turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six producing 450 hp.

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung moves well beyond that template.
Rather than simply turning up the boost on the six-cylinder car, AMG has created something with a more old-school character and a far more aggressive mechanical identity.
The flat-plane V8 gives the CLE 646 its character
At the centre of the car is a 4.0-litre biturbo V8 producing 646 hp and 850 Nm of torque.

Peak torque arrives from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm, giving the coupe the sort of mid-range force that has long defined AMG’s most memorable road cars.
The engine uses a flat-plane crank, a notable detail because it reduces rotating mass and helps the engine build revs more quickly.
AMG has also fitted a new cooling system, while the exhaust exits through stacked twin tailpipes designed to give the car a more purposeful voice.

Power runs through AMG’s Speedshift TCT 9G automatic transmission to all four wheels.
The numbers are suitably direct, with 0 to 100 kph taking 3.9 seconds and 0 to 200 kph completed in 11.4 seconds.
Top speed is listed at 314 kph, which places this limited CLE in a very different conversation from the regular coupe range.

Carbon fibre, wide arches and a pared-back cabin
The visual treatment is unmistakably AMG, though not subtle.
The front end gets a larger, more pronounced grille and a substantial bonnet intake, while the widened arches, side vents and extended skirts give the car a lower, broader stance.
A large rear wing and visible carbon fibre across the bodywork make the intent clear before the engine even starts.

Despite the larger V8, the CLE 646 weighs 1,895 kg, around 100 kg less than the CLE 53 AMG.
That reduction comes through the extensive use of carbon fibre, including on the roof and other exterior components.
The chassis has also been modified, with adjustable suspension components developed for the car and structural work aimed at reducing weight while adding strength where required.

Ceramic composite brakes are fitted to handle the car’s speed and repeated hard use.
Inside, the approach is focused rather than decorative.
Carbon fibre and Alcantara dominate the cabin, with red accents and model badging adding just enough theatre.

The flat-bottom steering wheel has fewer controls than expected because multiple drive modes and several driver assistance systems have been removed.
Two bucket seats trimmed in leather and Alcantara are paired with six-point harnesses, reinforcing that this is a driver-led AMG rather than a luxury coupe with extra horsepower.

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung feels aimed at the AMG faithful who still see the V8 coupe as the brand’s natural habitat.

With only 30 examples planned, it’s less a range extension than a statement piece, and one that reminds us how compelling AMG can be when it lets engineering lead the conversation.
