Mercedes-AMG has sharpened the CLE Coupe into something far more focused with the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung.
Limited to just 30 examples, the road-legal coupe sits closer to a circuit tool than a conventional grand tourer, pairing a 646 hp V8 with carbon-fibre weight reduction, a wide-body stance and hardware chosen for serious pace.
It’s the kind of car aimed at drivers who want the drama and usability of a registered coupe, but with a setup that won’t feel out of place on a closed circuit.

At a glance
- Mercedes-AMG has introduced the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung as a 30-car, road-legal high-performance coupe.
- It uses a 646 hp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, rear-wheel drive, carbon-fibre weight savings and track-focused chassis upgrades.
- Key hardware includes an Akrapovic-developed exhaust, KW-assisted coilover suspension, carbon ceramic brakes and a 193 mph top speed.
Carbon fibre gives the CLE a more serious edge
The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung begins with the current AMG CLE Coupe, but the familiar silhouette has been pushed in a more extreme direction.
Mercedes-AMG has trimmed 170 kg from the car through the use of carbon fibre, a meaningful cut for a modern performance coupe and one that should be felt in braking, turn-in and repeated track work.
The bodywork is wider and more assertive, with an aggressive front end, wider wheels and tyres, and a fixed rear spoiler that makes its intent hard to miss.

This isn’t a subtle styling package dressed up with a power increase.
The visual changes appear tied to the car’s broader brief, giving it the footprint and aerodynamic confidence expected of a limited-run AMG designed for fast road use and circuit driving.
A 646 hp V8 with rear-drive character
Under the bonnet sits a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 producing 646 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque.

Power is sent through a 9-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the rear wheels, with an electronically controlled limited-slip differential managing traction.
That rear-drive layout gives the CLE 646 a more purist performance character than an all-wheel-drive heavyweight, especially in a car designed to be driven hard rather than merely launched once for a headline number.
Still, the figures are properly serious.

With launch control engaged, the coupe runs from 0 to 124 mph in 11.4 seconds and continues to a top speed of 193 mph.
Akrapovic and KW help shape the track brief
The exhaust system was developed with Akrapovic, bringing a lighter construction and a more distinctive soundtrack to the Spezialanfertigung package.
In a car like this, the exhaust isn’t just theatre.

Reducing weight and improving response around a high-output V8 both matter when the brief includes closed circuits as much as country roads.
The suspension follows the same logic.
Mercedes-AMG co-developed the steel coilover setup with KW Automotive, a name long associated with track-capable suspension systems.

The car rides on 20-inch wheels and is fitted with carbon ceramic brakes, giving the CLE 646 the kind of stopping hardware buyers will expect from a limited AMG built for sustained speed.

The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung lands as a concentrated AMG coupe for a very small group of buyers, and its appeal is straightforward.
It keeps the usability of a road car, but its carbon-fibre diet, rear-drive layout and specialist chassis hardware make it feel engineered for drivers who measure a performance car by what it does after the first fast lap.
