Most dive watches live far from coral reefs and decompression stops, which is exactly what makes the MAT Watches Egg Master II so disarming.
It takes the everyday reality of the rotating bezel and leans into it with a practical, mildly absurd purpose, timing eggs with the seriousness usually reserved for underwater safety.
The result is playful, but it’s not a novelty watch pretending to be something more substantial.

A bezel calibrated for breakfast
The Egg Master II follows the original Egg Master from nearly five years ago, but the concept has been sharpened into a more complete mechanical watch.
MAT founder Fabrice Pougez developed the model with journalist Paul Miquel and chef Fabien Pairon, a Meilleur Ouvrier de France 2011 and 2023 World Champion of Œuf Meurette.
The bidirectional aluminium bezel is marked for four egg preparations, covering poached, soft-boiled, medium-boiled and hard-boiled eggs.
The timings are pleasingly exact, with poached eggs at 2 minutes 35 to 45 seconds, soft-boiled at 3 minutes 5 to 15 seconds, medium-boiled at 5 minutes 55 to 60 seconds and hard-boiled at 8 minutes 20 to 30 seconds.
To use it, the wearer aligns the chosen cooking style with the current minute hand position, starts cooking when the seconds hand reaches zero, then follows the bezel and coloured countdown zones on the dial.
Those timings are calculated for medium 53-gram eggs at sea level, a small detail that gives the whole idea its charm.
A compact diver with a sense of humour
The joke works because the watch underneath it is credible.
The Egg Master II uses MAT’s Picobello case in 316L stainless steel, measuring 39.5mm across and 12mm thick.
That size keeps it comfortably within modern compact-sports-watch territory, while the 200m water resistance and oversized 7.5mm screw-down crown give it the hardware of a real tool watch.
A domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating adds a soft vintage note without making the design feel costume-like.
The eggshell-toned dial is busy by necessity, but it stays legible thanks to large markers, broad black-outlined hands and Super-LumiNova treatment.
Orange, green, blue and red accents separate the cooking zones and tie the dial to the bezel scale.
The mechanical upgrade inside
The most important technical change from the first Egg Master is the move from quartz to an automatic movement.
Inside is the Soprod M100, a Swiss automatic calibre positioned as an alternative to familiar ETA 2824 and Sellita SW200 architecture.
It runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, has 25 jewels and offers around 42 hours of power reserve.
The movement is visible through a transparent screw-down caseback, which gives the watch a more complete enthusiast appeal than the first version.
MAT supplies the Egg Master II with three straps, including yellow and beige Tropic-style rubber options and an eggshell canvas strap.

The Egg Master II is for collectors who enjoy tool-watch language but don’t need every watch to arrive with a furrowed brow.
It’s witty, useful in a way most dive bezels already are, and mechanically serious enough to make the punchline last well beyond breakfast.
