IWC has taken its Pilot’s Watch language somewhere it has never really been designed to go before.
The Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive IW328601 is a spaceflight-certified tool watch developed with IWC’s XPL engineering division and Vast, built around the practical realities of operating a mechanical watch beyond Earth’s atmosphere.
Its most important idea isn’t decorative or nostalgic. It removes the crown entirely.

Vertical Drive rethinks the crown for gloved operation
The defining feature of the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive is its crownless architecture.
Instead of asking an astronaut to manipulate a conventional crown while wearing pressurised gloves, IWC has moved control of the watch to the rotating bezel.
The system, called Vertical Drive, uses a patent-pending mechanical arrangement that transfers bezel movement to the winding stem through a clutch.

A rocker switch on the case flank selects the desired mode, allowing the wearer to move between functions such as winding and time setting.
It’s a very IWC solution in spirit, mechanical, direct and rooted in use, but the context is markedly different from the cockpit instruments that shaped the brand’s Pilot’s Watch identity.
The bezel can be used for manual winding as a complement to the automatic winding system, a detail intended to keep the watch practical in both gravity and microgravity environments.

A GMT display for orbital timekeeping
The dial is pared back to the information an operator needs at a glance.
Its matte black surface carries central hour and minute hands for mission reference time, while a dedicated 24-hour hand tracks time around the outer scale.
That 24-hour format has a clear role in orbit, where crews may work against UTC or GMT rather than the cycle of sunrise and sunset visible from the spacecraft.

IWC also includes a second time zone function, with the central hour hand adjustable in one-hour increments, allowing the wearer to keep home time close without disturbing the main timekeeping structure.
The luminous coding is deliberately split by function.
The hour and minute hands are outlined in green Super-LumiNova, while the 24-hour hand uses a blue luminous tip, visually linking it to the blue seconds hand and matching inner track.

Ceramic and Ceratanium in a 44.3 mm case
The case measures 44.3 mm across and 16.7 mm thick, dimensions that reflect both its engineering brief and the complexity of its operating system.
IWC uses white zirconium oxide ceramic for the main case structure, a material valued here for hardness and resistance to thermal variation.
The bezel and case back are made from Ceratanium, IWC’s proprietary titanium-derived material, combining low weight with improved scratch resistance.

A domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on both sides sits over the dial, while water resistance is rated to 10 bar.
The watch is worn on an integrated white FKM rubber strap with a Ceratanium pin buckle, keeping the material story consistent from case to closure.
Testing for Haven-1 certification
Before receiving certification, the Pilot’s Venturer Vertical Drive underwent testing by Vast for conditions linked to human spaceflight.

Those trials included vibration exposure up to 10g, along with pressure and thermal variation assessments beyond the expected flight environment.
The result is official certification for flight aboard Haven-1, the commercial space station developed by Vast.
For IWC, the watch represents a shift from aviation-inspired utility to an instrument created for a new operational setting.
