The Ingenieur has always occupied a distinctive place inside IWC, sitting somewhere between tool watch, integrated-bracelet design object and quiet collector favourite.
For the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Ingenieur SL, IWC is returning to one of the collection’s cleanest historical cues with two limited-edition automatic models in stainless steel.
The new Ingenieur Automatic 35 and Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary editions keep the modern case architecture introduced in the collection’s recent revival, but trade the familiar grid-textured dial for a vertically brushed silver finish.

At a glance
- IWC has introduced two Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary limited editions in 35mm and 40mm stainless steel cases.
- Both watches feature silver-plated vertically brushed dials, rhodium-plated hands and markers, and a discreet “50” detail at 6 o’clock.
- Each size is limited to 1,150 pieces, with prices listed at £10,400 for the 35mm model and £11,900 for the 40mm model.
A cleaner tribute to the Ingenieur SL
The anniversary models are tied directly to the Ingenieur SL, the 1976 watch created after IWC asked Gerald Genta to reinterpret the line.
That watch helped establish the Ingenieur’s enduring visual language, with an integrated bracelet, a strong bezel and exposed screws that gave the model its engineered character.
The new editions don’t attempt to recreate the SL outright.

Instead, they use the current Ingenieur Automatic platform and lean into a dial treatment that recalls a silver brushed-dial version from the late 1970s.
It’s a subtle move, but an effective one.
Removing the grid pattern gives the watch a more pared-back, almost raw-metal personality, which suits the case and bracelet particularly well.

Two case sizes with the same industrial language
The Ingenieur Automatic 40 50th Anniversary is reference IW328910, while the Ingenieur Automatic 35 50th Anniversary is reference IW324909.
Both watches use stainless steel cases with broad brushed surfaces, polished bevels and the collection’s signature bezel with five visible screws.
The 40mm model measures 10.8mm thick, giving it the stronger wrist presence expected from the modern Ingenieur.

The 35mm version is 9.4mm thick and brings the design into a more compact, jewellery-adjacent space without softening the watch’s industrial edge.
That difference in scale matters because the integrated bracelet adds visual and practical length on the wrist.
For buyers who find many modern integrated-bracelet watches too broad or too flat across the wrist, the 35mm anniversary model may be the more versatile proposition.

The silver dial changes the character
The defining feature of these editions is the silver-plated dial with vertical brushing.
It gives the Ingenieur a more monochrome look, allowing the case, bracelet and bezel architecture to carry more of the design.
Rhodium-plated hour markers and matching hour, minute and seconds hands keep the presentation restrained, while Super-LumiNova adds practical legibility.

The date window remains, and the anniversary marking is handled with restraint through a small “50” below the Ingenieur logo at 6 o’clock.
That detail is just visible enough to separate the watch from the standard collection, without turning the dial into a commemorative plaque.
Different casebacks and movements
The two sizes diverge more clearly when turned over.

The 40mm version uses a solid caseback with a limited-edition inscription and includes a soft iron inner cage to improve resistance to magnetic fields.
The 35mm model has a sapphire display back that reveals its automatic movement and gold rotor.
Inside the 40mm watch is IWC’s calibre 32111, an automatic movement with a 120-hour power reserve.

The 35mm model uses calibre 47110, also automatic, with a 42-hour power reserve.
Both watches offer central hours, minutes and seconds, plus a date display, and both are water resistant to 100 metres.

The Ingenieur Automatic 50th Anniversary duo works because IWC hasn’t overplayed the celebration.
These are disciplined, sharply finished anniversary watches that favour proportion, texture and historical clarity over obvious nostalgia.
For collectors drawn to the Genta-era Ingenieur but wanting a contemporary daily watch, the brushed silver dial may be the cleanest expression of the modern line yet.
