Door communication has quietly become one of the more demanding parts of contemporary building design.
Residents expect convenience, property managers need centralised control, and architects don’t want a bulky panel spoiling a carefully considered entrance.
The DoorBird D22x Series lands squarely in that space, bringing a more capable generation of IP video door intercoms to private homes, residential developments and commercial buildings.

At a glance
- DoorBird has introduced the D22x Series, a new IP video door intercom range with more than 30 models.
- Key upgrades include a 5 MP HDR camera, 180-degree lens, multiple access methods, digital nameplates and broad system integration.
- The series is available now and offers an upgrade route for existing D21x installations.
A new platform for connected entrances
The D22x Series succeeds DoorBird’s D21x range and expands the idea of a door intercom into a broader access and building communication platform.
DoorBird, part of the ASSA ABLOY Group, has positioned the range for buildings where one entrance system may need to serve residents, visitors, tradespeople, office staff and management teams at the same time.
The portfolio includes more than 30 models, with versions offering traditional call buttons as well as digital nameplates and display-led resident directories.

Those digital nameplates are particularly relevant for larger residential or mixed-use properties, where names and occupancies change regularly and remote management can reduce day-to-day administration.
Camera, access and security hardware
Each model uses a 5 MP HDR camera with a Sony image sensor and a 180-degree ultra-wide-angle lens.
Video can be transmitted in HD quality through the local network or via DoorBird Cloud Pro, while the audio system is designed for clear conversations between residents and visitors.
Access options vary by model, but the range supports app access, dual-frequency RFID, Bluetooth, PIN code, QR code and fingerprint recognition.
A radar-led 4D motion sensor and integrated tamper sensor add further layers to the security package.
DoorBird also highlights privacy and information security as part of the product’s development framework, with the company operating under ISO/IEC 27001 certification and a Security by Design approach.
Integration for larger properties
The D22x Series has been built to sit within wider building technology ecosystems rather than operate as a closed front-door device.
Interfaces include SIP, OSDP, RS485 and Wiegand, alongside documented LAN and Cloud APIs.
DoorBird says the platform can integrate with more than 100 smart home, access control, video surveillance and building management systems.
It also supports installations with up to 3,000 residential or office units, which places it well beyond the single-family smart doorbell category.
Installation has been considered too, with an integrated power output for electric door openers that can remove the need for a separate power supply in many projects.
Accessibility options can be added across the model range, including an integrated hearing loop, pictograms and acoustic confirmation signals for door opening.
Designed for retrofit and architecture
One of the more practical details is the upgrade path for existing DoorBird D21x installations.
In modernisation projects, only the main electronic unit needs to be replaced, while existing housings, front panels and other components can remain in place.
Existing settings can also be retained, which should make the transition less disruptive for building operators.
Design flexibility is another major part of the proposition, with more than 50 finishes and colour options available.
Through the DoorBird 3D Configurator, customers can specify front panel sizes and shapes, engravings, mailboxes and even the integration of reader units from third-party manufacturers.
That level of configuration matters for premium residential buildings and commercial properties, where the entrance panel is often one of the first physical touchpoints with the building.

For owners and operators planning new buildings or upgrading existing entrances, the D22x Series looks less like a simple intercom and more like an adaptable access layer for the whole property.
Its appeal lies in that blend of security, integration and design flexibility, especially for projects where the front door has to be both technically capable and architecturally considered.
