Denza has put a striking new marker down in China’s fast-moving electric sedan market.
The Z9S is a large premium EV from BYD’s upscale brand, but its numbers read more like something from the supercar world than a conventional luxury four-door.
With up to 1,194 hp, a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 2.68 seconds and pricing that sits close to the China-made Tesla Model 3, the Z9S looks designed to unsettle several parts of the market at once.

At a glance
- Denza has launched the Z9S in China with three variants priced from 255,800 yuan to 325,800 yuan.
- The flagship version uses a tri-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing 890 kW, or 1,194 hp.
- All versions use a 102.326 kWh battery, with claimed CLTC range figures from 780 km to 1,100 km.
A five-metre luxury sedan with supercar acceleration
The headline version of the Denza Z9S is the tri-motor all-wheel-drive model, which combines its motors for 890 kW, equivalent to 1,194 hp.
Denza claims this range-topping version can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 2.68 seconds, a figure that would have sounded extreme for a large luxury sedan only a few years ago.
The Z9S stretches beyond five metres in length, so this isn’t a compact performance EV chasing lightweight agility.

Instead, it’s a full-size electric sedan built around the increasingly familiar Chinese EV formula of big battery capacity, major output and luxury-brand positioning at an aggressively competitive price.
The entry version is more restrained but still far from slow on paper.
It uses a rear-wheel-drive single-motor setup producing 370 kW, or 496 hp, which gives the lower-priced Z9S a serious performance baseline before the flagship model enters the conversation.

Range figures are just as ambitious as the power output
All three Z9S variants share the same 102.326 kWh battery pack.
The claimed CLTC range figures are 780 km, 920 km and up to 1,100 km, depending on variant.
As ever with CLTC ratings, real-world range will depend heavily on driving style, climate, speed and wheel-and-tyre specification.

Still, the figures show where Denza is aiming with the Z9S.
This isn’t being presented only as a straight-line performance sedan, but as a long-distance luxury EV with enough range on paper to appeal to buyers who don’t want to compromise between pace and daily usability.
Pricing puts Denza directly into Tesla territory
The Z9S starts at 255,800 yuan, roughly $37,600, and rises to 325,800 yuan, or about $47,900, for the most expensive variant.

That places it close to the China-made Tesla Model 3, which is priced from 235,500 yuan to 339,500 yuan, or around $35,150 to $50,675.
The comparison is notable because Denza is offering a physically larger sedan with far higher peak output at prices that overlap one of the world’s best-known electric cars.
For buyers in China, the Z9S appears to be positioned less as a niche performance flagship and more as a serious premium EV alternative in a highly contested price band.

It also underlines how quickly the Chinese market is compressing performance, battery capacity and luxury features into cars priced far below traditional high-performance benchmarks.

The Denza Z9S is interesting because it doesn’t rely on one shock figure alone.
Its appeal is the combination of size, range, acceleration and pricing, which makes it one of the clearest examples yet of how aggressively China’s premium EV brands are challenging the established order.
