Chevrolet Targets Pikes Peak Production Car Glory With the Corvette ZR1X

Chevrolet is sending its most extreme Corvette into one of motorsport’s most unforgiving arenas.

The 2027 Corvette ZR1X will take on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb with 1,250 hp, hybrid all-wheel drive and a clear target in mind, a run below 9 minutes 53 seconds.

If it gets there, the ZR1X would stake its claim as the fastest production car to climb the mountain.

Pikes Peak is not a conventional circuit, and that’s what makes this attempt interesting.

The 12.42-mile course climbs 4,725 feet and threads through 156 corners, placing enormous demands on power delivery, braking confidence, aero balance and driver commitment.

For a road-derived production car, the mountain is a particularly stern test because the car has to retain a meaningful link to what customers can buy.

Chevrolet’s entry will compete in the hybrid production class and will run a stock exhaust setup, which keeps the attempt tied closely to the ZR1X’s showroom identity.

JR Hildebrand gets the 1,250 hp assignment

JR Hildebrand will be behind the wheel for the record attempt, bringing top-level racing experience to a course where rhythm and restraint matter as much as outright speed.

The target is a sub-9:53 run, a mark that requires more than headline horsepower.

At altitude, grip changes corner by corner, braking zones arrive quickly, and the consequences of a mistake are severe.

That combination gives the ZR1X a stage that should reveal whether Chevrolet’s hybrid performance strategy can deliver sustained pace in one of the sport’s hardest environments.

Hybrid all-wheel drive is the key weapon

The ZR1X pairs a 5.5-litre V8 engine with a front-mounted electric motor, creating an all-wheel-drive layout that should be especially useful out of slower corners.

That matters at Pikes Peak, where clean traction can decide whether a driver carries momentum up the next section or loses time fighting the car.

Chevrolet quotes a 0-60 mph time of 1.89 seconds for the ZR1X with the ZTK pack, a figure that underlines just how aggressively this Corvette has moved into hypercar territory.

Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2R tyres will be tasked with translating that output into usable grip on the mountain.
