BMW’s next X5 M looks set to mark a major break from the combustion-era performance SUV formula.
A camouflaged electric prototype has been spotted testing in Germany, and even with the disguise in place, the big M model is already showing a more assertive face and a more technical approach to its aerodynamics.
The key detail is up front, where BMW appears to be reshaping the kidney grille into something taller, more upright and more three-dimensional than the cleaner treatment seen on standard Neue Klasse-style SUVs.

At a glance
- A camouflaged BMW X5 M electric prototype has been seen testing in Germany.
- The prototype shows a redesigned upright kidney grille, larger front intakes, extra vents and a more sculpted rear end.
- The electric X5 M is expected to use four motors, with output anticipated in the 800 to 900 hp range.
A more assertive take on the kidney grille
The front end is where this prototype makes its strongest statement.
BMW’s kidney grille remains central to the design, but the treatment here looks taller and more pronounced, with a three-dimensional form that gives the performance SUV a more forceful stance.
That matters because BMW’s electric-era design language has been moving toward cleaner, flatter surfaces, especially on Neue Klasse-inspired models.

The X5 M electric appears to be taking a different route, using a bolder grille shape to separate the high-performance model from the broader SUV family.
Below it, the bumper carries much larger air intakes and additional vents, giving the front fascia a more aggressive and functional look.
Aero details at the rear
The camouflage hides the finer surfacing, but the rear of the prototype still gives away several performance cues.

A secondary roof spoiler sits above the main unit, suggesting BMW is paying close attention to airflow management on what will likely be a very powerful and heavy electric SUV.
The rear bumper also appears more sculpted than the current X5 M’s, with a shape that looks designed to add visual width and a more planted road presence.
There’s no visible combustion-era exhaust drama here, which shifts the focus to bodywork, stance and aero detailing instead.

Four-motor performance could redefine the M SUV
The most important change is expected to sit beneath the bodywork.
The electric X5 M is tipped to use four electric motors, with one motor assigned to each wheel.
If that layout reaches production, it would give BMW’s M division far more precise control over torque delivery than a conventional all-wheel-drive setup.

Output is expected to sit between 800 and 900 hp, placing the model well beyond today’s petrol-powered X5 M in raw performance potential.
For buyers, the appeal won’t be only about straight-line pace.
A quad-motor electric M SUV could bring a new level of traction management, corner-exit response and software-controlled handling, provided BMW manages to preserve the driver involvement that defines its best M cars.

The new X5 M electric is still deep in prototype form, but the direction is becoming clearer.
BMW isn’t simply electrifying one of its most important M SUVs, it’s using the shift to rethink the model’s proportions, aero treatment and performance hardware for a very different era.
