A heavily disguised 2027 BMW M5 prototype has been testing at the Nürburgring, and even under camouflage it points to a sharper visual direction for BMW’s flagship performance sedan.
Sharper Neue Klasse Cues for the M5
The front end appears lower and more assertive, with slim LED headlamps and a kidney grille that looks wider and less upright than before.
That treatment fits with BMW’s evolving Neue Klasse design language, which is expected to influence more of the brand’s combustion and hybrid performance models as the decade progresses.
V8 Hybrid Power Stays in the Picture
Under the skin, the updated M5 is expected to continue with the plug-in hybrid setup used by the current model, pairing a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with electric assistance.
In today’s M5, that system produces 717 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque, giving the sedan the kind of output once reserved for full-size supercars.
Quad Exhausts and Slimmer Rear Lighting
At the rear, the test car shows slimmer wraparound LED taillights and the familiar quad-exit exhaust layout that remains a core M signature.
The exhaust note also suggests BMW is not trying to hide the combustion side of the car’s character, even as electrification does more of the heavy lifting in acceleration and response.
A More Focused Look for a Heavyweight Sedan
The next evolution of the M5 will need to balance mass, hybrid complexity and track durability, which makes Nürburgring development especially important for this generation.
If the camouflage comes off as expected over the coming development cycle, the 2027 BMW M5 should appeal to buyers who want modern hybrid performance without giving up a V8 soundtrack and the traditional M sedan silhouette.
