Timex has been steadily rebuilding its mechanical-watch credibility over the past several years, and the Marlin line remains central to that story.
The new Marlin Chatham Automatic pushes the collection into more formal territory, pairing a compact shaped case with dress-watch details more often associated with far pricier names.
It’s still very much a Timex, which means the appeal begins with accessibility, but the Chatham has a more polished and traditional character than many of the brand’s recent mechanical releases.

At a glance
- Timex has introduced the Marlin Chatham Automatic, a compact 36mm mechanical dress watch with vintage-inspired styling.
- The watch uses a polished cushion-shaped case, Breguet-style applied numerals and a Miyota 8215 automatic movement visible through the caseback.
- Pricing starts at EUR 279 or USD 289 for the steel version, with the gold-tone model priced at EUR 289 or USD 299.
A more formal Marlin with a shaped case
The Marlin Chatham Automatic stands apart from the round Marlin models by using a cushion-shaped case with a softly vintage profile.
At 36mm wide and 44.5mm lug-to-lug, it sits in a compact space that suits the watch’s dressier intent.
The case is fully polished stainless steel, with one version left in a silver-tone finish and the other treated with gold PVD coating.

Its 12mm thickness is not ultra-slim, but it’s understandable at this price point given the use of an automatic movement and a display back.
Up front, Timex uses a hardened mineral crystal rather than sapphire, while water resistance is rated to 50 metres.
Classic dial cues at an accessible price
The dial is where the Chatham makes its clearest play for old-world elegance.

Breguet-style applied numerals give the watch a more ornate personality, while the polished rounded hands keep the layout clean and free of lume.
There are two versions at launch.
The steel model comes with a silvery-white dial, creating the more understated option of the pair.

The gold-tone version moves in a warmer direction, combining a black dial with gold-coloured markers and hands.
Neither model tries to disguise its affordability, but both bring a level of formality that feels fresh within Timex’s mainstream mechanical catalogue.
The Miyota automatic inside
Visible through the caseback is the Miyota 8215, a familiar automatic calibre in the accessible mechanical-watch segment.

It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers around 42 hours of power reserve.
The movement includes hacking seconds, allowing the wearer to stop the seconds hand while setting the time.
Finishing is straightforward, with silver-coloured brushed bridges and a customised rotor giving the caseback a little more visual interest.

At this level, the movement choice is pragmatic rather than romantic, and that’s part of the Chatham’s broader value proposition.
Straps, pricing and positioning
Both versions are supplied on sustainable leather straps sourced from the Leather Working Group.
The steel and silver-dial version is paired with black leather, while the gold-tone model is matched to a brown strap.

Quick-release spring bars make strap changes simple, a practical touch for a watch that could move between office wear and more formal occasions.
The steel reference TW2Y84300 is priced at EUR 279 or USD 289.
The gold-tone reference TW2Y84500 is priced at EUR 289 or USD 299.

That places the Marlin Chatham Automatic in a useful space for buyers who want the feel of a vintage-leaning dress watch without moving into enthusiast-level pricing.

The Marlin Chatham Automatic works because it doesn’t try to make Timex something it isn’t.
It takes familiar mechanical-watch ingredients, packages them in a compact and genuinely elegant shape, and keeps the price where Timex tends to be most persuasive.
