Seiko Brings Silk Texture to a New 38mm Presage Classic Line

Seiko’s Presage Classic Series has found a compelling new rhythm in 38mm, a size that suits the collection’s dress-watch instincts without making it feel delicate.

The latest additions translate silk-inspired dial work into three regular-production models, joined by a more decorative Tomioka Silk limited edition.

It’s a tidy expansion with strong everyday proportions, a 72-hour automatic movement and enough Japanese craft context to keep the watches from feeling merely decorative.

The three regular models are named Shironeri, Wakatake iro and Sakura iro, with white, light green and light pink dials respectively.

Rather than chasing a literal silk texture, these dials use a stylised pattern of wavy concentric grooves radiating from the centre of the hands.

The effect is more graphic than traditional, with the ridges catching light in a way that gives the display a gentle petal-like movement.

The dial is also slightly curved, adding depth without disturbing the clean dress-watch layout.

All three use a 38mm stainless steel case with a 12.9mm thickness, a useful middle ground for buyers who want a refined watch that still feels contemporary on the wrist.

A smooth bezel gives the regular-production models a cleaner and slightly sleeker profile than the coin-edge treatment used elsewhere in the wider anniversary-related design language.

The 6R51 movement keeps the spec serious

Inside the new 38mm Presage Classic models is Seiko’s calibre 6R51, an automatic movement visible through the exhibition caseback.

Its headline figure is the 72-hour power reserve, which makes the watch practical across a weekend away from the wrist.

The watches display hours, minutes, seconds and date, keeping the complication set simple and appropriate for the collection’s dress-led personality.

Water resistance is rated at 100 metres, which gives these pieces more everyday resilience than their soft dials and polished surfaces might suggest.

The Shironeri white and Wakatake iro light green references are offered on stainless steel bracelets at £900, while the Sakura iro light pink model comes on an LWG leather strap at £890.

Tomioka Silk edition adds a cultural link

The fourth new model is the Presage Classic Series Tomioka Silk Limited Edition, a 2,000-piece release priced at £1,050.

It uses the same 38mm by 12.9mm case format and the same 6R51 automatic movement, but shifts the tone with a rose gold-coloured coating and a coin-edged bezel.

The dial takes the stylised groove pattern of the regular models and renders it in a light grey shade inspired by Gunma-Hoso silk.

The collaboration with the Tomioka Silk Promotion Organisation gives the watch a more specific cultural footing than a simple colour variation.

Its rose gold-toned case and deep red-brown leather strap are inspired by the red bricks of the Tomioka Silk Mill, and each watch is supplied with a Tomioka silk pocket square.
