Starlink, the satellite internet service developed by SpaceX, has become one of the most visible names in that shift, bringing low-latency connectivity into a conversation that used to revolve around range, cabin size and catering.

For business travellers, reliable onboard connectivity can mean joining a live meeting between cities, reviewing documents before landing, staying in contact with teams or handling time-sensitive decisions without waiting for touchdown.

For leisure passengers and VIP movements, the appeal is different but just as clear.
Streaming, messaging, video calls and connected devices have become part of how people relax, travel with family or maintain privacy while still remaining available.
That makes internet performance less of a novelty and more of a cabin quality marker.

Starlink gives the conversation momentum
Starlink’s aviation growth has made high-speed satellite connectivity more visible across the wider passenger market.
The service has added 11 new airline customers during the year and now has contracts covering more than 7,000 aircraft, a sign of how quickly the category is moving into mainstream aviation.
In the private jet world, that matters because many charter clients also fly first or business class on scheduled airlines.

Once fast onboard Wi-Fi becomes normal on premium commercial routes, private aviation has less room to treat connectivity as an optional flourish.
The technology itself is compelling because low-latency satellite internet is better suited to the way passengers actually use the cabin today.
Emails and messaging are no longer enough; the benchmark is increasingly video calls, cloud-based work, streaming and the ability to move between tasks without the connection feeling fragile.
Why aircraft selection is changing
Connectivity is now entering the aircraft selection discussion alongside the traditional charter criteria.
Range, routing, cabin configuration, crew, availability and service standards still come first, but onboard internet capability can influence preferences on longer trips.
That is particularly true for corporate travel, government movements, high-net-worth clients and VIP journeys where the aircraft is expected to support a full working day.

“People have become used to being always connected. As more scheduled airlines offer onboard connectivity, clients increasingly expect the same level of service when flying privately,” said Claudia Krajhanzl, Vice President Passenger – IMEA at Chapman Freeborn.
“For now, high-speed connectivity is not yet available across every private aircraft, but it is fast moving towards becoming an expected standard, especially on long-haul flights. Demand is currently stronger on long-haul flights than on shorter regional sectors, where connectivity may be less decisive.”
Adoption still depends on the aircraft
The private aviation market won’t become uniformly connected overnight.
Unlike a cabin amenity that can be changed quickly, satellite internet upgrades can involve installation work, technical integration, aircraft certification and operator-specific fleet planning.
Different aircraft types also present different practical considerations, and not every operator will move at the same pace.
That uneven rollout is important for charter clients because two aircraft with similar cabin appeal may offer very different digital experiences.
For charter brokers and operators, the question is becoming more precise.
It’s no longer simply whether an aircraft has Wi-Fi, but what kind of connectivity it offers, how consistently it performs and whether it suits the route and passenger profile.
