Seiko has introduced the 5 Sports Field Explorer, a more outdoors-focused take on its everyday field watch formula with a larger 41mm case and a bi-directional compass bezel.
The new model sits within the brand’s accessible 5 Sports family, keeping the automatic movement, day-date display and approachable pricing that have long made the range a popular first step into mechanical watches.

A Larger Field Watch With Navigation in Mind
At 41mm in diameter and 13.2mm thick, the Field Explorer is larger than the more compact 5 Sports Field models, giving it a stronger tool-watch presence without turning it into a full dive watch.

The key addition is the rotating compass bezel, which can be used with the hour hand and the position of the sun to establish direction when navigating outdoors.
A knurled bezel edge gives the watch a more functional feel and should make it easier to operate when moving through a trail, campsite or weekend hike.
Hardlex Crystal, 100 Metres of Water Resistance
The stainless steel case is fitted with a curved Hardlex crystal and offers 100 metres of water resistance, keeping the watch practical for daily wear and light outdoor use.

It is not trying to replace a dedicated diver or expedition instrument, and that restraint is part of the appeal at this price point.
The brown-dial version has a distinctly military-leaning character on its Cordura nylon strap, while khaki green adds another field-ready option.
Black and white dial variants are also available, with those versions supplied on stainless steel bracelets rather than Cordura straps.

Seiko’s Familiar 4R36 Automatic Movement
Inside is the Seiko calibre 4R36, an automatic movement running at 21,600 vibrations per hour with a 41-hour power reserve.
The movement powers central hours, minutes and seconds, along with day and date displays, and can be viewed through an exhibition caseback.
An open back may not be essential on an outdoor-leaning watch, but it has become part of the 5 Sports identity and gives newer collectors a view of the mechanics inside.

Price and Position in the 5 Sports Range
The Seiko 5 Sports Field Explorer is priced at £340 on a Cordura nylon strap and £360 on a stainless steel bracelet.
That keeps it firmly in entry-level mechanical-watch territory, aimed at buyers who want a rugged automatic from a major brand without stepping into Prospex pricing.
For collectors, the appeal is less about rarity and more about usefulness: this is the kind of watch that can be worn hard, packed for a trip and treated as a capable everyday companion.
