RGM has always occupied a distinct place in American watchmaking, less interested in chasing trends than in preserving the visual language of classical horology.
With the new Model 501-PC, the Pennsylvania watchmaker brings the perpetual calendar back into its collection after a long absence, wrapping one of watchmaking’s great traditional complications in a design that nods to late-19th-century American pocket watches.
It’s a compact, formal and deliberately old-world piece, but not a museum object.

At a glance
- RGM has introduced the Model 501-PC, its first perpetual calendar since the Model 103-R Minute Repeater Perpetual of the late 1990s.
- The watch pairs a 39mm stainless steel case with a white Grand Feu enamel dial, moon phase and perpetual calendar indications.
- It is powered by an ETA 2892-A2 modified by RGM with a custom Dubois Dépraz perpetual calendar module and is priced at USD 39,900.
A perpetual calendar returns to RGM
The Model 501-PC is significant because it revisits a complication RGM hasn’t offered for many years.
For founder Roland G. Murphy, the project also aligns neatly with the brand’s long-running fascination with American watchmaking history, particularly the complicated pocket watches produced in the late 1800s.
That influence is clear without feeling theatrical.

The case measures 39mm in diameter and 11.5mm thick, proportions that keep the watch relatively restrained despite the automatic movement, perpetual calendar module and moon phase display inside.
Its 316L stainless steel case mixes brushed and polished surfaces, with curved lugs, recessed correctors and a crown at 3 o’clock.
A raised box-style sapphire crystal gives the dial extra depth, while a sapphire display back opens the watch to view from the other side.

An enamel dial with pocket-watch discipline
The dial is the centre of the watch, and RGM has chosen one of the most traditional materials available.
Its white Grand Feu-fired enamel surface gives the indications a crisp, almost architectural clarity, a quality that suits a perpetual calendar especially well.
Blued steel hands add the expected classical contrast, while the peripheral minute track uses red Arabic numerals at five-minute intervals.

Roman numerals mark the hours, reinforcing the pocket-watch character without overcrowding the display.
The layout is balanced and familiar, with the date at 3 o’clock, the day at 9 o’clock, the month and leap-year cycle at 12 o’clock and the moon phase at 6 o’clock.
The month indication is one of the more interesting visual details.

It is divided into four year segments, with January, April, July and October written out by abbreviation and dots used for the other months.
During a leap year, the month names appear in red, while January markings are also rendered in red in the other years.
A small hand completes one revolution every four years, giving the wearer a direct view of the full perpetual calendar cycle.

A Swiss automatic base reworked in Pennsylvania
Inside the Model 501-PC is the ETA 2892-A2, an automatic calibre that RGM has extensively modified and paired with a custom Dubois Dépraz perpetual calendar module.
The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, uses 21 jewels and offers a stated power reserve of 52 to 56 hours.
Finishing is treated in a traditional manner, visible through the sapphire caseback.

The rhodium-finished movement features Côtes de Genève, perlage and blued screws, while the solid-gold winding rotor carries the RGM logo and the company’s United States location.
It’s an approach that reflects RGM’s broader identity, combining American design cues and finishing sensibilities with carefully selected Swiss mechanical architecture.
Ownership and positioning
The Model 501-PC sits in an interesting part of the market because it isn’t trying to be a mass luxury perpetual calendar.

Its appeal is more specific, aimed at collectors who value independent watchmaking, traditional display formats and the rarity of a complicated watch assembled by an American maker.
The watch is delivered on a brown alligator leather strap with a steel pin buckle, keeping the overall presentation formal and understated.
At USD 39,900, it’s a serious acquisition, but the combination of enamel dial, perpetual calendar, moon phase and RGM’s particular historical vocabulary gives it a clear identity.

The Model 501-PC works because it doesn’t force modernity onto a complication that already carries centuries of watchmaking weight.
Instead, RGM gives the perpetual calendar a distinctly American frame, making this one of the brand’s most compelling recent expressions of its historical and mechanical point of view.
