RGM Revives E.F. Bowman With a Lancaster-Built 501-EFB

RGM has never treated American watchmaking as a museum piece, and the new Model 501-EFB makes that point with unusual clarity.

The Mount Joy, Pennsylvania independent is bringing back the E.F. Bowman name, tying a modern mechanical wristwatch to one of Lancaster County’s most meaningful horological figures.

It’s a local story as much as a watch story, and for founder Roland G. Murphy, it’s also personal.

A Lancaster name with real roots

Ezra F. Bowman was born in Lancaster County in 1847 and became one of the region’s notable watchmaking names during a period when American horology was rapidly taking shape.

Rather than follow the traditional seven-year apprenticeship path, Bowman trained intensively with a Swiss watchmaker for two years, an experience that later shaped his own ideas about technical education.

In 1877, he opened a jewellery and watch shop at 106 East King Street in Lancaster, then expanded into wholesale supply, repair work and eventually a family business known as Ezra F. Bowman’s Sons.

Bowman also tried his hand at manufacturing under the E.F. Bowman Watch Company, working with movement designer W.H. Todd, a figure connected with Adams & Perry Watch Company and the Lancaster Watch Company.

The manufacturing run was extremely small, with around 50 pocket watches believed to have been made between 1879 and 1882.

His broader impact came through education, with the Bowman Technical School becoming an important American centre for watchmaking, jewellery repair and engraving.

That connection runs directly into RGM’s story, as Roland G. Murphy attended the Bowman Technical School in the early 1980s before founding one of America’s best-known independent watch companies.

Enamel dial and pocket-watch cues

The Model 501-EFB carries the Bowman name without turning into a nostalgic costume piece.

Its 39mm case is made from American-made 316L stainless steel, with a 48mm lug-to-lug measurement and a thickness of 11.3mm including the box-style sapphire crystal.

The proportions are restrained, helped by conventional lugs, a threaded bezel and a flat sapphire display back.

Water resistance is rated to 50 metres, which suits the watch’s dress-leaning character while keeping it practical enough for regular wear.

The dial is the emotional centre of the watch.

RGM uses a white Grand Feu-fired enamel dial inspired by a 1920s Patek Philippe pocket watch made for Ezra F. Bowman & Sons.

The layout translates that pocket-watch language into a clean three-hand wristwatch, with a railroad minute track around the edge and a recessed small seconds display at 6 o’clock.

Blued-steel hands add the right period note without overwhelming the dial’s spareness.

A micro-rotor movement with RGM finishing

Inside is the Schwarz Etienne ASE 200, an automatic micro-rotor movement that gives the watch a modern mechanical foundation.

The calibre runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers an 86-hour power reserve.

RGM finishes the movement with a rhodium treatment, Côte de Genève and perlage visible through the rear sapphire crystal.

The most distinctive detail is the solid-gold micro-rotor plaque made by RGM, marked for Ezra F. Bowman.

It’s a thoughtful flourish, and one that keeps the historical reference inside the watch rather than only on the dial.
