Patek Philippe’s Watch Art Grand Exhibition arrives in Milan with the kind of scale that turns a temporary show into a major horological moment.
Running from October 2 to 18 at CityOval, formerly the Palazzo delle Scintille, the exhibition brings together more than 500 pieces and marks the seventh edition of the format that began in Dubai in 2012.
The real collector intrigue sits alongside the archive watches, where Patek Philippe is introducing seven limited editions reserved for the Italian market.

Milan takes centre stage in Patek’s global exhibition series
The Watch Art Grand Exhibition has become one of Patek Philippe’s most ambitious public-facing projects, part museum show and part brand statement.
After earlier editions in cities including Dubai, Singapore and Tokyo, Milan gives the manufacture a setting with both cultural weight and deep collector relevance.
The venue choice also matters.

CityOval, the former Palazzo delle Scintille, gives the exhibition a historic architectural frame for archive pieces, rare complications and the new limited editions created for the occasion.
Those new watches aren’t simply Milan-themed souvenirs.
They include serious complications, enamel work and market-specific details that underline how carefully Patek Philippe treats these exhibitions as moments for collectors rather than simple showcases.

The 5978P-010 introduces a new instantaneous grand complication
The most technically significant watch in the Milan line-up is the Ref. 5978P-010 Milano 2026 Limited Edition.
Limited to 120 watches, it places an instantaneous perpetual calendar chronograph inside a 42mm platinum Calatrava case measuring 14.24mm thick.
The watch is powered by the new manually wound Caliber CH 29-535 PS QI, which combines Patek Philippe’s CH 29-535 PS chronograph architecture with an instantaneous perpetual calendar system.

It is the first time Patek Philippe has combined two instantaneous complications in a single wristwatch.
The calendar display uses three apertures arcing across 12 o’clock for the day, date and month, with blue indications against white backgrounds and white-gold frames.
At midnight, the indications jump together in 30 milliseconds, while a moonphase at 6 o’clock, day/night display at 8 o’clock and leap-year indication at 4 o’clock complete the calendar layout.

The calendar text is in Italian, a small but meaningful detail for a watch created around the Milan exhibition.
The chronograph side is equally considered, with an instantaneous 30-minute counter at 3 o’clock and small seconds at 9 o’clock.
That minute counter snaps forward as the central chronograph seconds hand completes each revolution, keeping the chronograph feel crisp and mechanically precise.

The energy management is the hard part.
Patek Philippe’s mechanism stores energy over several hours and releases it in a fraction of a second, allowing the calendar indications to jump while the instantaneous chronograph counter continues to function.
The 500-component movement runs at 4 Hz and offers an estimated 55 to 65 hours of power reserve when the chronograph is disengaged.

Through the sapphire caseback, the movement is visible beneath a transfer-printed Milano 2026 inscription.
On the dial side, the navy-blue sunburst finish has a textured centre and a dark gradient rim, giving the platinum case a more contemporary presence than the complication’s traditional lineage might suggest.
World time repeaters with Milan in enamel
The Ref. 5531G returns for Milan in two white-gold limited editions, each limited to five watches.

The Ref. 5531G-012 shows Milan’s city centre by day in grand feu cloisonné enamel, while the Ref. 5531G-013 presents the city by night.
Both continue a format Patek Philippe has used for major exhibition editions, where the host city becomes the dial’s miniature artwork.
Here, Milan also appears in red on the city disk, with the remaining 23 time-zone cities displayed in Italian.

The Ref. 5531 is not a conventional world time minute repeater.
Rather than chiming home time while the wearer travels, it strikes the local time corresponding to the city selected at 12 o’clock and shown by the central hand.
That function comes from the self-winding Caliber R 27 HU, a movement developed to combine the world time display with a minute repeater.

The case details lean into classic Patek craft, with a hand-guillochéd caseband and a repeater slide decorated with the brand’s hobnail pattern.
Each watch is supplied with interchangeable sapphire crystal and white-gold back covers.
Italian colours through a Calatrava lens
The Milan releases also include a trio of white-gold Calatrava models using the colours of the Italian flag.

The green Ref. 7147G-010 is a perpetual calendar with moonphase, the white Ref. 7007G-010 pairs a date display with centre seconds, and the red Ref. 7047G-010 is a minute repeater.
All three are housed in 38mm fully polished white-gold cases.
The graphic direction recalls the bolder design language associated with the 2020 Ref. 6007, but the smaller case size gives the trio a more compact and dress-focused profile.

It is also a neat expression of the Milan strategy.
Patek Philippe is not just stamping a caseback and calling it a local edition, but spreading the Italian theme across complications, dial colours, city disks and enamel work.

For collectors, the Milan editions sit at the intersection of scarcity, locality and serious Patek Philippe watchmaking.
For everyone else visiting the exhibition, they add a contemporary chapter to a show already built around the manufacture’s long memory.
