Panerai Brings 1990s Luminor Attitude Into a 42mm Case

Panerai’s latest Luminor release lands in a sweet spot the brand hasn’t really occupied before.

The new PAM01710, PAM01711 and PAM01714 take the visual language of the early-1990s Luminor and bring it into a 42mm case, giving one of modern watch culture’s most recognisable silhouettes a more accessible wrist presence.

For a brand so closely tied to large, purposeful watches, that size shift matters.

The early-1990s Luminor is an important chapter for Panerai because it sits at the point where the brand’s tool-watch identity began crossing into the collector world.

The 1993 Luminor Ref. 5218-201/A and Luminor Marina Militare Ref. 5218-202/A helped define that transition, carrying military-derived design into watches intended for civilian ownership.

Those watches were large, direct and unmistakably Panerai, with the sort of wrist presence that later became central to the brand’s following.

The new 42mm format changes the conversation without abandoning the design code.

At 42mm wide and 13.8mm thick, these models are still substantial, but they sit closer to the sizing many collectors now consider wearable day to day.

That makes the trio a useful bridge for anyone drawn to Panerai’s shape and history, but hesitant about stepping straight into the brand’s more imposing case sizes.

Sharper lines and the familiar crown bridge

Each dial uses beige-toned Super-LumiNova on the hour markers, central hands and small seconds display at 9 o’clock.

The result is deliberately restrained, with a slightly aged tone that nods to the period without turning the watch into a costume piece.

The P.980 movement keeps the focus practical

Inside all three watches is Panerai’s automatic P.980 calibre, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a 72-hour power reserve.

That three-day reserve feels particularly appropriate here, since long autonomy has become one of the quiet signatures of Panerai’s modern watchmaking.

The function set is simple and faithful to the character of the line, with hours, minutes and seconds rather than added complication.

Each watch is delivered on a colour-matched canvas strap, with beige for the black-dial PAM01710, green for the PAM01711 and blue for the DLC-coated PAM01714.

Within the wider Luminor range, the pricing places these watches just above the Luminor Base Logo models, making them a more historically charged step into the collection.

Panerai hasn’t softened the Luminor so much as made this particular expression easier to approach.
