Mido Gives the Ocean Star 39 a Deeper Blue Dial

Mido’s Ocean Star 39 has quickly become one of the more persuasive compact divers in its price segment.

The new Abyss Blue version keeps the same practical case, slim profile and 200-metre rating, then gives the watch a richer, more tonal personality inspired by open-water blues.

It’s a small shift on paper, but on a watch this restrained, the colour does much of the talking.

The Ocean Star collection has been part of Mido’s dive-watch story since the 1940s, but the 39mm model feels particularly tuned to current tastes.

Its stainless steel case measures 39mm across and 46mm lug to lug, dimensions that give it real sport-watch presence without pushing into oversized territory.

The case finishing mixes satin-brushed surfaces with polished accents, which helps the watch avoid the flat, purely instrumental look of many entry-level divers.

A unidirectional rotating bezel uses a blue aluminium insert with silver-coloured markings, plus a white Super-LumiNova dot at 12 o’clock for orientation in low light.

The sapphire crystal has anti-reflective coating on both sides, while the screw-down crown and solid caseback help secure the 200m water-resistance rating.

The Abyss Blue dial keeps the wave motif

The defining update is the abyss blue dial, which carries over the embossed wave-like texture used on the Ocean Star 39.

It gives the watch more depth than a flat sunburst dial would, without turning it into a decorative piece first and a dive watch second.

Applied hour markers use a mix of triangles, dots and indices, all treated with white Super-LumiNova.

The faceted hands are also lumed, and the date window remains neatly positioned at 3 o’clock.

Together with the blue bezel and optional blue rubber strap, the dial creates a nearly monochromatic look that feels cohesive rather than costume-like.

Calibre 72 keeps the case slim

Inside is Mido’s automatic Calibre 72, built on the ETA A31.111 platform.

The movement is an important part of the Ocean Star 39’s appeal because it allows the watch to maintain a relatively slim profile compared with models using larger Swatch Group automatic calibres.

It runs at 25,200 vibrations per hour, uses a Nivachron balance spring for improved resistance to magnetism and shocks, and delivers a 72-hour power reserve.

The movement is adjusted in four positions and includes decorative finishing, with Côtes de Genève visible on the rotor.

Bracelet, rubber strap and everyday usability

Mido supplies the Ocean Star 39 Abyss Blue with two interchangeable options.

The stainless steel bracelet has polished bevels on the centre links and a folding clasp with a diver’s extension.

A blue rubber strap is also included, fitted with a stainless steel pin buckle.

Both options use Mido’s quick-change system, so switching between bracelet and strap doesn’t require tools.

That matters on a watch like this because the Ocean Star 39 is clearly designed to move between office wear, travel, swimming and casual weekends without needing to be babied.
