Mercedes-AMG appears to be moving the next CLE 63 into a more visible phase of development.
An early prototype has been seen testing in the United States with only selective camouflage, which usually says more than a fully wrapped test car ever could.
The covered areas are limited to the nose and tail, suggesting AMG’s work is concentrated around the parts that matter most for cooling, aero balance and visual separation from lesser CLE models.

At a glance
- An early 2027 Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 prototype has been spotted testing in the United States.
- The car shows front and rear camouflage, a vertical-slat AMG grille, revised bumpers, LED taillamps, a subtle boot spoiler and twin exhaust outlets.
- The model is expected to use AMG’s 4.0-litre flat-plane-crank V8, with final CLE 63 tuning still to be confirmed.
A sharper AMG nose takes shape
The front end is where the prototype gives away its clearest production clues.
The car wears a prominent grille with vertical slats, with the three-pointed star positioned at the centre but blacked out on this development vehicle.
AMG’s familiar grille treatment appears to continue into the lower bumper area, where the vertical theme is echoed below the main intake.

That detail gives the front fascia a more assertive look without relying on excessive disguise or add-on theatrics.
The bumper itself also appears to have been reworked, potentially to accommodate more purposeful aero shaping around the lower intakes.
That would make sense for a CLE 63, where cooling demand and high-speed stability are likely to be as important as the visual drama.

The rear treatment looks more restrained than theatrical
At the back, the prototype shows large taillamps with LED lighting elements and a subtle integrated boot spoiler.
It’s a relatively clean treatment, and that restraint may prove important for the CLE 63’s positioning.
AMG’s best road cars often work because they blend menace with usability, and this test car seems to be moving in that direction rather than chasing an oversized wing or overt track-car posture.

Two exhaust outlets are visible at the rear, while the bumper is also expected to receive detail changes before the model reaches showrooms.
The camouflage at the rear is concentrated enough to suggest Mercedes is still keeping some of the final lower bumper and diffuser treatment out of view.
The V8 question will define the CLE 63
The most important part of the 2027 Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 won’t be its grille or its spoiler, but what sits ahead of the firewall.

The model is expected to use AMG’s newer 4.0-litre flat-plane-crank V8 engine.
In its current S-Class application, that unit produces 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque.
A CLE 63 tune would need to be tailored to a very different brief, especially if AMG wants the car to feel sharper, more compact and more overtly sporting than a large luxury sedan.

The flat-plane-crank configuration is significant because it points to a different character from AMG’s traditional cross-plane V8 soundtrack and delivery.
If Mercedes-AMG follows through with that engine choice, the CLE 63 could become one of the more interesting modern AMG flagships for buyers who still want a serious combustion-engine identity.

The limited camouflage makes this prototype particularly useful because it suggests Mercedes-AMG is refining the CLE 63 rather than hiding a radically different silhouette.
For AMG loyalists, the bigger story is the promise of a serious V8-powered flagship with enough visual restraint to keep the focus on engineering, feel and everyday speed.
