Louis Vuitton’s Monterey has always sat slightly apart from conventional watch design, less a miniature instrument than an object with its own silhouette.
The latest Monterey Ceramic leans into that character, reviving the rounded pebble profile of the maison’s earliest wristwatches while moving the execution firmly into contemporary Louis Vuitton watchmaking.
After last year’s limited yellow gold edition, the new ceramic models join the permanent collection in black and green, each with a lacquered dial, a crown at 12 o’clock and an in-house automatic calibre from La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.

A ceramic return to Louis Vuitton’s first watch shape
The Monterey story begins in 1988, when Louis Vuitton introduced its first wristwatches under the LV I and LV II names.
They were created with Italian architect and designer Gae Aulenti and manufactured by IWC, giving the project an unusual blend of fashion-house identity, architectural thinking and serious watchmaking credibility.
The LV I established the smooth, lugless gold pebble profile that returned in last year’s limited edition.
The LV II took the more experimental route, using zirconia-based ceramic at a time when the material was still finding its place in high-end watches.
That context matters because ceramic is not merely a cosmetic choice for the new Monterey.
It reconnects the watch to one of the boldest early Louis Vuitton watch designs, while making the case feel sharper, glossier and more architectural than a traditional precious-metal revival.
Black and green with very different personalities
The new Monterey Ceramic comes in two versions, and they don’t read like simple colour variations.
The green model is the more tonal and contemporary of the pair, matching a polished green ceramic case with a green lacquered dial.
White Arabic numerals and a white railway minute track keep the dial crisp, while yellow lacquered syringe hands add just enough contrast without disturbing the overall monochrome mood.
The black model is the cleaner historical gesture, pairing a polished black ceramic case with a white lacquered dial and the vivid accents that made the original Monterey so distinctive.
Its red lacquered hour and minute hands and blue lacquered central seconds hand give the watch a graphic quality that feels more design object than dress watch.
Both versions keep the crown at 12 o’clock, now finished with Clous de Paris knurling for a more tactile surface.
It’s a small update, but on a lugless watch with such a reduced case shape, details like the crown carry unusual visual weight.
La Fabrique du Temps moves the Monterey in-house
The most important technical shift is inside the case.
Where the original LV II used a quartz movement, the new Monterey Ceramic is powered by Louis Vuitton’s self-winding Caliber LFTMA01.02.
The movement runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers a 45-hour power reserve, bringing the Monterey into the maison’s current manufacture era.
Louis Vuitton is also emphasizing a broader in-house approach here, with the ceramic case, lacquered dial and movement all tied to the expertise of La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton.
That gives the watch a different position from a straightforward archival reissue.
It keeps the essential outline of the 1988 design, but its construction, mechanics and finishing belong to the modern Louis Vuitton watch division.

The Monterey Ceramic will appeal to collectors who like Louis Vuitton at its most design-led, especially those drawn to watches with a strong silhouette rather than conventional codes of sport or formality.
