Lamborghini isn’t rushing the Urus into a fully electric future.
The next generation of Sant’Agata’s best-selling super-SUV is set to keep a V8 at its core, pairing combustion power with plug-in hybrid assistance instead of switching to battery-only propulsion.
For buyers who see the Urus as much for its attitude as its usability, that decision matters.

At a glance
- Lamborghini’s next-generation Urus will use a V8 plug-in hybrid setup rather than become a fully electric SUV.
- The engine architecture is related to hardware used across the Volkswagen Group in models from Porsche, Audi and Bentley.
- The current hybrid V8 formula already delivers up to 800 hp in the Urus SE Performante.
A V8 hybrid path for the next Urus
Urus product line director Stefano Cossalter has made the direction clear, saying the next-generation model won’t be an electric car.
Instead, Lamborghini will continue with a V8 hybrid layout, leaning on the instant torque and daily flexibility that suit a high-performance SUV.
That keeps the Urus aligned with the wider performance-SUV market, where plug-in hybrid powertrains are increasingly being used to preserve big outputs while adding electric assistance.

It also allows Lamborghini to retain the character expected from the badge, rather than asking its most practical model to make the brand’s first full-electric SUV leap.
Shared Volkswagen Group hardware, Lamborghini tuning
The core V8 architecture sits within the Volkswagen Group’s performance toolbox.
Related hardware already underpins the Audi RS Q8, Porsche Cayenne Turbo and Bentley Bentayga, though each brand uses it with a different brief.

For Lamborghini, the job is more aggressive.
The Urus has always been positioned as the sharpest, most extroverted member of that family, and the next model is expected to keep that emphasis even as electrification becomes a larger part of the powertrain.
That shared foundation also gives Lamborghini access to proven engineering while leaving space for calibration, response and chassis character to feel distinct.

The current hybrid benchmark
The clearest indication of where Lamborghini is heading can be seen in the latest V8 plug-in hybrid Urus formula.
In the Urus SE Performante, a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 works with an electric motor to produce a combined 800 hp and 738 lb-ft of torque.
Performance remains firmly in super-SUV territory, with 0–62 mph in 3.3 seconds and a top speed of 194 mph.

Those numbers show why Lamborghini is keeping faith with a combustion-led hybrid setup for now.
It offers the torque, pace and everyday usability expected of the Urus without removing the mechanical personality that still defines the car for many buyers.
