Honda’s most focused Civic Type R project is no longer a Japan-only prospect.
The Civic Type R HRC, first shown at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January, is making its North American debut at SEMA with official confirmation that it’s being developed for the US market.
That matters because this looks like more than a cosmetic special edition.

At a glance
- Honda has confirmed the Civic Type R HRC is in development for the US market.
- The concept features more aggressive aero, HRC hardware and an Akrapovic exhaust.
- The production model hasn’t been fully detailed, though earlier reports suggest it will be road legal and based on the facelifted FL5 Civic Type R.
A sharper Type R with HRC intent
Honda describes the HRC-spec concept as offering a further refined “joy of driving” shaped by racing environments.
That language is carefully chosen, but the hardware shown so far points to a Civic Type R aimed at drivers who want a more serious factory-developed package.
Until now, production for Japan was the only clear part of the story.
The US confirmation changes the tone of the project, especially for Type R buyers who have watched Honda Racing Corporation become more visible on road-car development.
The concept’s aero changes are hard to miss
The show car wears a much more assertive front end, with a larger intake, twin air guides and a deeper lip.
At the rear, Honda fitted bigger wing endplates and a more substantial diffuser, both of which give the HRC concept a stronger track-day presence than the standard FL5.
Honda also fitted the concept with an HRC-branded radiator and an Akrapovic exhaust.
Those details suggest a broader rethink of cooling, airflow and sound rather than a simple appearance package, though Honda hasn’t confirmed final production specifications.
Power and chassis upgrades remain the big questions
The current US-market Civic Type R is rated at 315 hp.
Japanese reports have put the HRC version at around 335 hp, with intake, exhaust and software changes cited as the likely route to the increase.
There may also be chassis upgrades, including revised suspension, larger brakes and forged wheels.
Carbon-fibre parts are expected as well, but Honda has not yet released a final parts list, price or on-sale timing for the US version.

For US enthusiasts, the key news is simple enough: Honda hasn’t just built a showpiece, it has confirmed that America is part of the plan.
