Few actor-and-watch pairings feel as unforced as Steve McQueen and the Hanhart 417 ES.
The German pilot’s chronograph became part of McQueen’s off-screen image through motorcycle racing, desert competition and the stripped-back California style that still defines much of his appeal.
Hanhart’s new 417 ES Steve McQueen Limited Edition No. 1 brings that association into a 300-piece release with faithful proportions, modern mechanics and a few carefully judged nods to the man who wore the original.

A Bundeswehr chronograph with McQueen provenance
The 417 ES began life in the mid-1950s as a pilot’s chronograph for the German Bundeswehr, with the ES standing for Edelstahl, the German word for stainless steel.
Its appeal was never about ornament.
The original design was built around legibility, durability and simple chronograph operation, qualities that translate naturally to motorsport and motorcycle use.

McQueen’s connection to the watch is well documented through photographs from his racing years and life in California.
In 1964, he rode for the United States team at the International Six Days Trial in Erfurt, competing on a modified Triumph through the Thuringian Forest.
He later entered events including the Baja 1000 and sometimes raced under the name Harvey Mushman, a practical disguise that let him compete with less celebrity attention.

The familiar 39 mm case and red pusher
Hanhart has kept the watch close to the historical format, using a 39 mm stainless steel case with a 46 mm lug-to-lug measurement.
The case measures 13.3 mm thick including the highly domed sapphire crystal, and water resistance is rated to 10 ATM, or 100 metres.
The matte black dial carries the historical Hanhart logo, with Steve McQueen’s signature placed discreetly at 6 o’clock.

Light Old Radium Super-LumiNova gives the hands and numerals the warm tone associated with aged luminous material, without asking the wearer to live with vintage fragility.
The minute and seconds hands curve down at their tips to help reduce parallax errors, a functional detail that suits the watch’s instrument character.
A fluted bidirectional bezel with a red insert frames the dial, while the red chronograph pusher remains one of Hanhart’s most recognisable design signatures.

The colour has long been tied to a story about a pilot’s wife marking the pusher with red nail polish as a reminder for him to return safely.
It also served a practical purpose, making the reset pusher harder to operate by mistake.
Hanhart leans into that piece of brand lore by including a small bottle of red nail polish in the presentation box.

A hand-wound flyback made for timing on the move
Inside the watch is Hanhart’s hand-wound AMT5100 M calibre, visible through a screw-down sapphire case back.
The movement is built on the Sellita AMT platform and runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour, or 4 Hz.
Power reserve is rated at a minimum of 58 hours.

Alongside central hours and minutes, small seconds and a 30-minute chronograph counter, the movement includes a flyback function.
That allows the chronograph to be reset and restarted in one action while it’s running, a useful feature for successive timing intervals.
Hacking seconds are included for more precise setting.

Each movement is regulated by Hanhart in Gütenbach to the brand’s own accuracy standard, with an average daily rate between 0 and +8 seconds across six positions.
The cuff strap completes the McQueen silhouette
One of the most distinctive elements of McQueen’s own 417 ES was the way he wore it on a dark brown cuff strap.
The new limited edition follows that look with a padded dark brown Shell Cordovan strap made by an Italian tannery.

Shell Cordovan is produced from the dense fibrous layer of the horse’s hindquarters and is traditionally vegetable-tanned, giving it a smooth surface, durability and a natural lustre.
The strap uses a pin buckle with Hanhart’s historical logo.
With a 20 mm lug width, the watch can also take the other strap options made for the 417 ES 39 mm, including black, dark brown and light brown leather straps.

It is also compatible with Hanhart’s newer stainless steel bracelet with tool-free micro-adjustment, and the strap options use quick-release spring bars.
The box includes a booklet, a numbered plaque, the red nail polish and a limited-edition card inspired by McQueen’s 1964 international FIM racing licence.
The card is signed by Chase and Madison McQueen, who were involved in the development of the edition and approved the use of their grandfather’s signature on the dial.

The reverse side also carries the signature of the watchmaker who assembles the chronograph in Gütenbach.

The 417 ES Steve McQueen Limited Edition No. 1 works because it doesn’t try to polish away the rough-edged charm of the watch McQueen actually wore.
It keeps the size, attitude and utility intact, then adds enough modern execution to make the chronograph feel like a daily object rather than a museum exercise.
