IWC Schaffhausen is returning to one of the most important chapters in the Ingenieur story with two anniversary editions that look back without feeling stuck in the archive.
The new Ingenieur Automatic 40 IW328910 and Ingenieur Automatic 35 IW324909 mark 50 years since the 1976 Ingenieur SL, the Gérald Genta design that gave the collection its integrated-bracelet identity.
Both watches keep the current Ingenieur’s sharply resolved case and bracelet architecture, but swap the familiar grid-textured dial for a cleaner brushed silver-plated finish inspired by a rare late-1970s Ingenieur SL Jumbo.

At a glance
- IWC has introduced two limited Ingenieur anniversary editions in 40mm and 35mm stainless steel cases.
- Both watches feature brushed silver-plated dials, rhodium-plated hands and markers, integrated steel bracelets and 100 metres of water resistance.
- Each size is limited to 1,150 pieces, priced at EUR 14,700 for the 40mm and EUR 12,800 for the 35mm.
The Ingenieur SL’s place in the integrated-bracelet canon
The Ingenieur name predates the SL by more than two decades, with the collection tracing its origins to the mid-1950s.
Still, it was the Ingenieur SL Jumbo Ref. 1832 of 1976 that fixed the visual code most collectors now associate with the line.
Designed by Gérald Genta, the watch arrived during the formative years of the luxury steel sports watch, following the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and arriving in the same period as the Patek Philippe Nautilus.

Where those watches leaned into angular signatures, the Ingenieur SL softened the formula with a more rounded bezel profile and a technical, instrument-like character that suited IWC’s engineering-led personality.
The modern Ingenieur returned in 2023 with a design much closer to that 1976 reference than the more muscular interpretations seen in earlier revivals.
These anniversary pieces build on that foundation rather than reinventing it.

A silver dial with a quieter vintage signal
The most immediate change is the dial.
Instead of the grid-like texture used across the standard current Ingenieur line, IWC has chosen a vertically brushed silver-plated dial that gives the watch a more restrained, period-correct mood.
It’s a subtle shift, but an important one.

The current Ingenieur can feel architectural and modern, while this silver treatment pulls the design closer to late-1970s steel sports watches without turning it into a costume piece.
Rhodium-plated applied hour markers and hands keep the tone cool and metallic, while Super-LumiNova inserts preserve everyday legibility.
The framed date window sits at 3 o’clock on both versions, though the execution differs slightly between the two sizes.

On the 40mm model, the window partially intersects the 3 o’clock marker, while the 35mm version removes that marker to make room for the date display.
Two sizes, two movement approaches
The anniversary pair shares a stainless steel case with brushed and polished finishing, a fixed bezel secured by functional screws and an integrated three-link steel bracelet with a folding clasp.
Both are rated to 100 metres of water resistance, which keeps them firmly in daily-wear territory.

The 40mm model is the more technically direct nod to the Ingenieur’s anti-magnetic roots.
It uses a soft-iron inner case and a closed steel caseback, a configuration that reinforces the collection’s original tool-watch purpose.
Inside is IWC’s Calibre 32111 automatic movement, running at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offering a notably long 120-hour power reserve.

That five-day reserve gives the 40mm edition a practical edge, especially for collectors rotating between several watches.
The 35mm edition takes a different route with a sapphire crystal caseback that reveals the Calibre 47110 automatic movement.
It runs at the same 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers 42 hours of power reserve, with visible finishing including circular graining, blued screws and a gold-coloured central rotor.

As anniversary watches go, these Ingenieur editions are appealing because they don’t lean too hard on nostalgia.
The proportions, movement choices and bracelet execution belong to the modern collection, while the silver dial and anti-magnetic emphasis on the 40mm model give collectors a direct line back to the Ingenieur SL’s most distinctive era.
