Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 collection has become one of the brand’s most important modern pillars, and for 2026 three familiar names are getting meaningful upgrades.
The White Birch, Atera Valley and Lake Suwa references keep their recognisable dial identities, but move to a new Spring Drive UFA calibre and a revised bracelet that addresses a long-running point of collector feedback.
It’s a quiet update on the surface, yet an important one for anyone who follows Grand Seiko’s push toward higher precision and better daily wearability.

Grand Seiko hasn’t tried to reinvent the visual character of these watches, which is sensible given how strongly these dials are already associated with the brand’s modern identity.
The more significant change is the move to Ever-Brilliant Steel across the case and bracelet.

The 40mm Evolution 9 case remains the centre of the package, with the same broad, faceted language that gives the collection its more contemporary stance.
The dimensions are measured rather than oversized, with an 11.7mm thickness and a 47.9mm lug-to-lug measurement that should keep the watch wearable on a range of wrists.
A box-shaped sapphire crystal, screw-down crown and screwed sapphire caseback are all present, while water resistance is rated to 100 metres.

Grand Seiko has given the bracelet a stronger taper than before, making it look less broad on the wrist and improving its visual balance with the 40mm case.

Spring Drive UFA replaces the 9RA2 calibre
The mechanical headline is the shift from the five-day 9RA2 Spring Drive movement to the newer calibre 9RB2 with Ultra Fine Accuracy.
This automatic Spring Drive movement is rated to ±20 seconds per year, or roughly ±3 seconds per month, placing it among Grand Seiko’s most precise regular-production watch movements.
The calibre measures 30mm in diameter and 5.02mm thick, helping the updated models come in a fraction slimmer than their predecessors.
Power reserve is 72 hours from a single barrel, with the indicator placed on the back to keep the dial clean.
Through the sapphire caseback, the movement shows the Shinshu Watch Studio finishing style, pairing frosted plates and bridges with polished bevelled edges.
The 9RB2 also introduces a regulation system to a Spring Drive movement, another sign that Grand Seiko is treating UFA as a serious long-term technical platform rather than a one-off showcase.
