The Breguet Marine 5517 has always occupied an unusual place in the sports-watch conversation.
It carries the robustness expected of a modern nautical-inspired watch, but its personality is rooted in guilloché, gold dials, fluted casebands and the kind of finishing that makes more sense under a loupe than on a dive boat.
For its latest update, Breguet hasn’t altered the case or movement, but it has changed the mood of the watch considerably.

At a glance
- Breguet has updated the Marine 5517 time-and-date with newly designed dials across white gold, rose gold and titanium references.
- The refresh brings a hand-guilloché Quai de l’Horloge centre, applied Breguet Arabic numerals and a date window moved to 6 o’clock.
- Prices start at EUR 23,700 for the titanium model on rubber, rising to EUR 71,800 for gold versions on matching bracelets.
A naval line with a more measured dial
Breguet’s connection to the sea is more than a branding exercise.
In 1815, Abraham-Louis Breguet was appointed watchmaker to the French Royal Navy, a role tied to the age of marine chronometry and the pursuit of more precise navigation at sea.
The Marine collection arrived much later, in 1990, as a modern expression of that chapter in the maison’s history.

Today’s Marine 5517 is not a specialist instrument in the utilitarian sense, even with its screw-down crown and 100 metres of water resistance.
It’s better understood as a high-watchmaking sports watch with maritime references, and this update leans further into that identity.
The most visible change is the dial architecture.

Breguet has moved the date to 6 o’clock, giving the watch a cleaner vertical axis and a calmer sense of proportion.
The date frame is matched to the hands and hour markers, which helps it feel integrated rather than simply inserted into the dial.
The Quai de l’Horloge motif takes centre stage
The central dial now carries Breguet’s hand-guilloché Quai de l’Horloge pattern, a wave-like motif named after the Paris address on the Île de la Cité where Breguet’s early workshops stood.

It replaces some of the previous Marine’s more assertive visual cues with something finer and more closely aligned with the house style.
The dial begins with an 18k gold base that is engraved by hand on a rose engine lathe, then finished with colour and translucent lacquer.
The white gold model gets an ice blue dial, the titanium version uses a blue dial, and the rose gold reference is paired with black.

Breguet’s applied Arabic numerals now sit on a smooth circular-brushed chapter ring, replacing the earlier luminescent Roman numerals.
It’s a significant shift, not just a cosmetic adjustment, because the watch now reads more clearly as a Breguet before it reads as a sports watch.
The familiar pomme hands remain, as does the “B” counterweight on the central seconds hand.

Lume is still present inside the circular tips of the hour and minute hands and on the five-minute nautical pennant markers around the perimeter.
An applied gold Breguet signature at noon adds another traditional note to the new composition.
The Marine case remains assertive
Breguet has left the case dimensions untouched at 40mm in diameter, 11.5mm thick and 47.7mm lug to lug.

The shape remains one of the Marine’s defining traits, with its rounded profile, fluted caseband and bold tripartite lugs.
Those features give the 5517 a strong wrist presence without pushing it into oversized territory.
Inside is the automatic calibre 777A, an in-house movement running at 4Hz with a 55-hour power reserve.

Its technical package includes an inverted in-line lever escapement and silicon balance spring, while the finishing keeps the naval theme in play.
The bridges are decorated with hand-guilloché stripes reminiscent of ship decking, and the openworked rotor evokes a ship’s wheel.
Each version can be ordered either on a matching metal bracelet or a rubber strap decorated with the same Quai de l’Horloge pattern used on the dial.

The rubber option gives the watch a more contemporary, less formal posture, while the bracelet turns it into a far more assertive luxury sports piece.

The updated Marine 5517 is still recognisably the same watch, but its centre of gravity has moved.
Where the earlier execution pushed harder into sporty maritime character, the new dial treatment brings it closer to Breguet’s classical world, which may be exactly where this collection is strongest.
