BMW’s next X5 is shaping up to be one of the brand’s most technically varied SUVs yet.
For 2027, the fifth-generation model adopts the Neue Klasse design language and broadens the lineup with petrol, plug-in hybrid and fully electric variants, while hydrogen propulsion is planned for later.
The headline figure belongs to the X5 M60e plug-in hybrid, which brings 612 hp to BMW’s core luxury SUV.

At a glance
- The 2027 BMW X5 debuts as a new-generation SUV with petrol, plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains.
- The X5 M60e plug-in hybrid leads the range with 612 hp, while the electric iX5 60 uses dual motors and a 141 kWh battery.
- BMW’s Neue Klasse styling reaches the X5 with an illuminated narrow kidney grille, double X-shaped LED headlights and a redesigned digital cabin.
Neue Klasse styling reaches BMW’s luxury SUV core
The new X5 is the third BMW model to receive the Neue Klasse visual treatment, and it gives the SUV a cleaner, more technical face.
Up front, the familiar kidney grille is slimmer than before and framed by illumination, sitting between a narrow fascia and double X-shaped LED headlamps.
BMW says this headlight signature is a first for the brand, and it gives the X5 a more graphic look than the outgoing model’s broader, more conventional lighting arrangement.

The side profile is notably uncluttered, helped by winged door handles positioned at the base of the B- and C-pillars.
At the rear, slim LED tail-lights and a sculpted bumper continue the more pared-back approach, while the X5 moves away from its previous split-folding tailgate layout.
A more screen-led cabin with a new driver display concept
Inside, BMW has given the X5 a cabin that feels more closely aligned with its next-generation electric and digital strategy.

The dashboard is dominated by a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, while a 14.6-inch passenger display is available as an option.
Rather than using a traditional instrument binnacle, the driver information is integrated into a panoramic display positioned beneath the windshield.
A distinctive four-spoke steering wheel adds to the cabin’s more futuristic layout without abandoning the X5’s role as a large premium SUV built for everyday use.

The 612 hp X5 M60e tops a wide powertrain lineup
The fifth-generation X5 will be offered with a 3.0-litre straight-six engine, alongside plug-in hybrid versions badged X5 50e and X5 M60e.
The X5 M60e is the standout for performance buyers, pairing plug-in hybrid technology with a total output of 612 hp.
BMW is also adding a fully electric version called the iX5 60, which uses dual electric motors producing 578 hp and 593 lb-ft of torque.

Its 141 kWh battery is listed with a range of 525 miles, putting the electric X5 firmly in long-distance luxury EV territory.
A hydrogen-powered X5 is also planned for the future, extending the model’s role as a test bed for multiple propulsion strategies rather than a single-powertrain SUV.
