Baltic and SpaceOne have introduced the Seconde Majeure, a French collaboration that turns a jumping hour display into something unusually approachable, both visually and commercially.
A French pairing that makes more sense on the wrist
At first glance, Baltic and SpaceOne sit at opposite ends of the independent watch spectrum.
Baltic is known for traditional proportions and vintage-minded restraint, while SpaceOne has built its identity around futuristic cases and unusual mechanical displays at comparatively attainable prices.
The Seconde Majeure works because it does not ask either brand to disappear.
Theo Auffret’s jumping hour module takes center stage
The watch is built around a jumping hour module designed by Theo Auffret, with three key elements visible on the dial side.
A large minute disc rotates once every 60 minutes and gives the watch its hand-free central minute readout.
At the top of the hour, that disc interacts with a 12-tooth star wheel connected to the hour disc, while a jumper spring holds tension until the hour advances cleanly.
The result is a vertical way to read time that feels mechanical and legible rather than theatrical for its own sake.
Maillechort gives the display a warmer character
The transparent wheels are set into a maillechort plate, a choice that softens the technical layout with a more traditional tone.
That material decision is where Baltic’s influence is most apparent, giving the watch a look that feels less like a concept piece and more like an alternate-history mid-century experiment.
A round 38.5mm case with careful finishing
The Seconde Majeure uses a circular 38.5mm case, making it one of the more conventional silhouettes associated with SpaceOne so far.
There is still plenty of detail in the execution, including a brushed midcase, brushed lugs and brushed caseback set against a high-polished concave bezel.
The arched lugs help the watch sit comfortably, and the case remains wearable despite a height of just over 12mm.
Two finishes and a narrow order window
Baltic and SpaceOne will offer the Seconde Majeure in two versions, separated by the finishing of the maillechort plate.
The brushed edition is priced at 2,500 euros, while the more decorative Charbonne version is priced at 3,500 euros.
Orders are scheduled to run from May 12 through May 17, with deliveries expected in November.
For collectors who like independent watchmaking but want something wearable, legible and not wildly priced, the Seconde Majeure lands in a compelling middle ground between Baltic’s charm and SpaceOne’s mechanical ambition.
