Atelier Wen and Massena Lab Bring Gold Dial Craft to the Tantalum Inflection Shuò

Atelier Wen’s Inflection Shuò is the kind of collaboration that makes sense before you even get to the spec sheet.

It brings Massena Lab’s eye for historically literate design into Atelier Wen’s world of Chinese craft references, then wraps the whole thing in one of watchmaking’s most difficult modern metals.

The result is a 50-piece limited edition with serious material presence, a notably uncommon movement choice and a dial that does most of its talking through handwork rather than volume.

The Inflection may sit close to the Perception in Atelier Wen’s design language, but this is a more unusual proposition on the wrist.

Its case and bracelet are made from tantalum, a dense, heavy metal that has appeared only sparingly in modern watchmaking because of how difficult it is to machine and finish.

That scarcity is part of the appeal, but tantalum isn’t just a novelty material.

It gives the Inflection a cool, weighty character that separates it from the more familiar steel, titanium and precious-metal options competing in the same enthusiast space.

The case measures 40mm across, 45mm lug to lug and 10.2mm thick, keeping the profile relatively sleek despite the substantial choice of metal.

Water resistance is rated to 100 metres, which helps the watch retain a practical edge rather than becoming a purely decorative exercise.

A gold dial split between two design languages

The dial is where the collaboration becomes clearest.

Atelier Wen and Massena Lab have used a California dial layout, but instead of simply dividing Roman and Arabic numerals, the Inflection Shuò splits its identity between Arabic numerals on the upper half and Chinese characters on the lower half.

The Arabic numerals use Massena Lab’s typeface, while the Chinese characters were commissioned by Atelier Wen.

Both are hand-engraved by Coralie Mercier, giving the dial a level of texture and human irregularity that a printed execution would never carry.

The dial itself is solid gold, offered in a rose-gold variant or a rarer white-gold variant.

Only 40 examples will be produced in rose gold, while the 10 white-gold examples are reserved for existing customers.

A radially brushed chapter ring frames the numerals, while hand tremblage adds fine surface movement on either side.

The outer dial carries Atelier Wen’s huiwan pattern, a recurring motif for the brand and a clear nod to traditional Chinese decoration.

Against that amount of dial craft, the hand set stays deliberately restrained.

Hand-blued leaf-shaped hands bring a classical note without fighting the engraving, tremblage and patterned outer track for attention.

A Girard-Perregaux calibre inside

Inside the Inflection Shuò is a self-winding, customised Girard-Perregaux GP03300 calibre.

That choice matters because it gives the watch a movement identity beyond the more predictable calibres often seen around this end of the independent-watch spectrum.

The movement offers hours, minutes and seconds, with a stated power reserve of 48 hours.

It’s not chasing complication count, and that restraint suits the watch.

The technical interest is spread across the case material, dial craft and bracelet execution rather than being concentrated solely under the caseback.

Limited production and collector positioning

With only 50 pieces planned, the Inflection Shuò sits firmly in collector territory.

Its appeal is likely strongest for buyers who already understand Atelier Wen’s design vocabulary but want something more ambitious than a standard production piece.

Massena Lab’s involvement adds another layer, particularly for collectors who appreciate watches that pull from different visual traditions without turning the result into pastiche.

The price is CHF 33,800 before taxes, and deliveries are scheduled to begin in small batches in early 2027.

For a young brand, this is a confident move into a more demanding tier of material, finishing and allocation.
