Angelus Instrument de Mesures Brings Three Classic Timing Scales to One Monopusher Chronograph

Angelus has been rebuilding its chronograph identity with watches that feel closer to measuring tools than dress pieces with pushers.

The new Instrument de Mesures is the most complete expression of that direction so far, gathering three historically useful timing scales into one compact, manually wound monopusher chronograph.

It’s a watch for collectors who like their chronographs with purpose, density and a little old-world cleverness.

The Instrument de Mesures sits in a stainless steel case measuring 39mm across and 9.25mm thick, which gives it a notably restrained profile for a chronograph with this much information on the dial.

Angelus has leaned into vintage instrument cues without turning the watch into a direct throwback.

The slim polished bezel, twisted lugs and box-shaped sapphire crystal all help frame the dial in a way that feels period-aware, while the sapphire caseback keeps the execution contemporary.

Water resistance is rated to 30 metres, which is in keeping with the watch’s more classical, collector-focused character.

The single pusher format also matters here.

By removing the visual weight of a two-pusher chronograph layout, Angelus gives the case a cleaner silhouette and puts more attention on the dial architecture and the act of timing itself.

Three measurement scales on one layered dial

The dial is available in ebony black or ivory white, both with a finely grained finish and a deliberately technical layout.

There’s a lot happening, but the watch avoids becoming unreadable by separating the functions across a three-dimensional dial construction.

The centre is domed, the intermediate section slopes away, and the outer ring is raised, giving each track its own visual zone.

The outermost scale is a telemeter, used to calculate distance by measuring the delay between seeing an event and hearing it.

Inside that sits the minutes track, followed by a pulsometer calibrated over 15 beats, then a spiral tachymeter closest to the centre for average speeds between 20 and 500 km/h.

Angelus uses colour to keep the information organised.

On the black dial, the scales appear in blue, orange and cream, while the ivory dial uses blue, red and green.

The markings are laser-cut directly into the dial structure, which gives the scales definition rather than simply printing everything onto one flat surface.

Syringe hands with Super-LumiNova handle the hours and minutes, while the central chronograph hand becomes the tool for whichever scale the wearer is using.

The A5000 calibre keeps the mechanics traditional

Inside is Angelus calibre A5000, a manually wound monopusher chronograph movement used across the brand’s recent Instrument series.

The movement measures 24mm in diameter and 4.2mm thick, runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of up to 42 hours.

Its architecture is reassuringly traditional, with column-wheel control and a horizontal clutch.

Through the sapphire caseback, the movement contrasts a 3N gold finish with palladium-treated chronograph components, helping the timing mechanism stand out visually.

The finishing includes circular graining, Côtes de Genève, polished bevels and carefully finished bridges, which is the sort of detail that suits a watch built around mechanical measurement rather than decorative complication.

The Instrument de Mesures is not trying to make the chronograph simpler.

Its appeal is in the opposite direction, giving the wearer a compact mechanical object that preserves the old language of measured distance, pulse and speed in a format that still feels considered on the wrist.
