Rolex’s latest colourful Oyster Perpetual has put the word “Jubilee” back in the spotlight, but the term carries far more history than a dial pattern.
A Rolex word with anniversary roots
In Rolex language, Jubilee first belongs to celebration, not merely decoration.
The name entered the catalogue in 1945, when Rolex marked 40 years since the founding of Wilsdorf & Davis with the Datejust and a ladies’ Perpetual model described as Jubilee watches.
That choice matters: Rolex avoided the plain word “anniversary” and opted for a term with a more ceremonial, almost regal tone.
The bracelet that made Jubilee famous
Today, most collectors hear Jubilee and think of the five-link bracelet long associated with the Datejust.
Its dressier character comes from narrow outer links framing three central links, a construction that looks especially familiar in two-tone Rolesor with gold centre links.
The first 1945 version was not quite the modern bracelet many know now, as it was made in 18-carat gold and used a two-piece construction rather than the familiar later clasp architecture.
The stamped dial that hides in plain sight
Rolex gave Jubilee another meaning in 1985 with a dial formed by repeated capital letters spelling R O L E X.
The letters are stamped from the back so they stand proud on the dial surface, while the diagonal strokes of each X line up to create a subtle striped rhythm across the face.
Over four decades, the Jubilee dial has ranged from restrained monochrome executions to more decorative versions with tapestry effects and gem-set details.
Why the new Oyster Perpetual works
The ten-colour Jubilee dial on the Oyster Perpetual is clever because it places an exuberant motif inside Rolex’s most pared-back modern watch.
With a steel case, smooth bezel, simple time-only display and no date aperture, the watch gives the dial room to do all the talking.
It also continues a recent playful streak in the Oyster Perpetual family, following the bright lacquer dials introduced in 2020 and the multi-colour Celebration dial from 2023.
For collectors, Jubilee is therefore not one thing but a Rolex vocabulary word: a commemoration, a bracelet, a dial texture and now a way for the brand’s simplest watch to carry some of its deepest internal history.
