The Ulysse Nardin Freak has always been one of modern watchmaking’s great provocations.
Twenty-five years after the original arrived without a conventional dial, hands or crown, the new Freak [X] brings that same movement-as-display idea into a more compact and practical shape.
It’s still unmistakably a Freak, but this generation looks far less like an occasional statement piece and much more like a watch you could actually wear often.

A smaller Freak with a more natural fit
The most important change is also the easiest to understand.
The Freak [X] has been reduced from 43mm to 41mm, while the lug-to-lug measurement drops from 49.6mm to 47.3mm.
Thickness is now 10.35mm, or 13.6mm when the glassbox sapphire crystal is included, which keeps the watch relatively lean given the architecture on display.
Those numbers don’t sound dramatic in isolation, but a two-millimetre reduction in case size can completely change the way a watch like this sits on the wrist.
The earlier Freak [X], launched in 2019, was already the more approachable member of the family because it added a crown and simplified daily operation.
This new generation goes further by softening the physical presence without diluting the visual theatre that defines the collection.
The UN-232 keeps the carousel at centre stage
Inside is the new automatic manufacture calibre UN-232, developed over two years by Ulysse Nardin.
The movement preserves the Freak’s essential trick, with a flying carousel that completes one rotation every 60 minutes and serves as the minute indication.
Hours are shown by a pointer on a rotating disc, so the act of reading the time remains inseparable from watching the mechanism move.
The UN-232 is more compact than the previous generation’s movement, helping make the smaller case possible.
It also introduces DIAMonSIL to the Freak [X] for the first time, using diamond-coated silicon in the escapement to improve hardness, efficiency and durability at a critical point of mechanical stress.
An oversized silicon balance wheel and silicon hairspring are produced at SIGATEC, Ulysse Nardin’s silicon laboratory.
The calibre uses 216 components, runs at 3Hz and offers a 72-hour power reserve.
A rose gold micro-rotor is fully integrated into the movement, adding warmth to the open caseback without interrupting the architecture.
Monobloc case construction and sharper finishing
The case construction has also been reworked.
Where previous Freak [X] models used modular titanium architecture, the new version moves to a monobloc case in either 80 percent recycled steel or rose gold.
Ulysse Nardin says the monobloc approach improves structural rigidity and acoustic stability, which is especially relevant in a watch with so much visible mechanical motion.
The screw-down crown and 100 metres of water resistance are significant practical details, especially for a watch that now leans harder into daily wear.
Finishing remains a major part of the appeal.
The hour and minute indicators and oscillator bridge are hand-bevelled, while applied hour markers with white Super-LumiNova improve depth and legibility.
Through the caseback, the UN-232 combines satin-brushed, grained and polished surfaces, with colimaçon decoration on the rose gold micro-rotor.
Bracelet, straps and launch versions
The new interchangeable strap system may be the quiet upgrade that owners appreciate most.
The Freak [X] now supports quick-release changes across nine configurations, including an integrated metal bracelet, leather straps and rubber options.
The integrated steel bracelet is made from the same 80 percent recycled steel as the case and includes 2mm micro-adjustment support on both sides.
At launch, the collection includes three versions.
The Freak [X] Grey pairs a grey sandblasted hour disc with a recycled steel case, while the Freak [X] Blue uses a blue gradient satin sunburst hour disc and is offered on the integrated steel bracelet.
The Freak [X] Gold brings a rose gold case, rose gold-coloured bridge and indexes, and a black sandblasted hour disc.

The Freak has spent a quarter of a century making the mechanics of timekeeping feel theatrical.
With this new Freak [X], Ulysse Nardin hasn’t made the idea less radical, it has simply made it easier to wear, easier to adjust and easier to imagine outside the collector’s box.
