Tudor’s Black Bay Chrono has always been a muscular proposition, especially in its familiar 41mm steel case.
The Black Bay Chrono 39 Bumblebee changes that balance without turning the watch into something delicate, pairing a smaller footprint with a bright yellow dial that’s impossible to ignore.
It’s not just a colour story, either, because the case, bezel, bracelet, dial furniture and pushers have all been reworked to suit the new format.

A tighter Black Bay Chrono case
The key shift is size, but the numbers tell only part of the story.
The Black Bay Chrono 39 Bumblebee moves to a 39mm case, down from the regular 41mm steel Black Bay Chrono, with thickness reduced to 13.1mm and lug-to-lug length brought down to 47mm.
Those changes make the watch feel more compact and easier to settle on the wrist, while preserving the stout, sporty character that has defined the Black Bay Chrono since its debut in 2017.
The case still uses brushed top surfaces, polished flanks, a bevelled edge and a box-shaped sapphire crystal.
The slimmer bezel profile helps the 39mm case avoid looking visually heavy, though the narrower tachymeter insert gives the scale less space to breathe.
That redesigned tachymeter looks more refined, but it may not be quite as instantly legible as the larger 41mm version.
Tudor has also reduced the size of the screw-down chronograph pushers to suit the case.
They help retain the watch’s substantial 200-metre water resistance, but they do mean a timing action requires a brief unscrewing step before the chronograph can be started.
The Bumblebee dial is more than a colour choice
The yellow dial is the obvious talking point, and that’s precisely the point.
A black or blue dial would have made the new case size the entire story, while this colour gives the watch a stronger identity from the outset.
The layout remains recognisably Black Bay Chrono, with a bicompax arrangement, date at 6 o’clock and Tudor’s familiar sporting-vintage language.
The hour markers are slightly smaller, the handset appears slimmer, and the “Swiss Made” text has moved inside the minute scale to preserve balance on the reduced dial.
The subdials are another important change.
Rather than the stepped, concave treatment seen on earlier steel Black Bay Chrono models, the Bumblebee uses flat snailed subdials with a revised scale.
The left register now shows 20, 40 and 60 markings, giving the dial a cleaner but slightly different character from the established 41mm models.
On the crown, Tudor has moved from the rose logo to the Shield logo, a detail that fits the brand’s current visual language but is less forgiving if alignment catches the eye when the crown is screwed down.
The MT5813 keeps the technical brief serious
Inside, Tudor hasn’t used the smaller case as a reason to step down mechanically.
The Black Bay Chrono 39 Bumblebee runs on the Calibre MT5813, the same automatic chronograph movement used in the larger Black Bay Chrono line.
It is a COSC-certified column-wheel chronograph with a vertical-clutch architecture, a variable inertia balance and a non-magnetic silicon balance spring.
The calibre beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and delivers a 70-hour power reserve, which remains one of the watch’s strongest everyday advantages.
Accuracy is rated at -2/+4 seconds per day, giving the watch a tighter stated performance window than the standard COSC chronometer range.
The result is a chronograph that feels playful from the dial side but serious where it needs to be.

Who the 39mm Bumblebee is for
The Black Bay Chrono 39 Bumblebee will appeal most to collectors who like Tudor’s chronograph formula but found the 41mm case a touch too broad or tall.
It also suits buyers who want a genuinely capable automatic chronograph that doesn’t default to conservative dial colours.
The non-riveted three-link bracelet is an important upgrade in daily wear, particularly because Tudor’s T-Fit clasp gives quick micro-adjustment without tools.
At EUR 6,200, it sits in serious chronograph territory, but the specification makes the pricing feel considered rather than inflated.
The yellow dial won’t be for everyone, and that’s part of its charm.
