Seiko’s Power Design Project has always been one of the brand’s more interesting creative outlets, giving its designers room to make watches that don’t need to behave like regular catalogue pieces.
For 2026, one of those ideas is making the jump to the wrist in proper numbers, though not unlimited ones.
The Power Design Project Panda Chronograph turns the familiar panda-dial chronograph into something far more literal, with a face, ears and a caseback that leans completely into the bear theme.

At a glance
- Seiko is releasing the Power Design Project Panda Chronograph as a 5,000-piece limited edition.
- The watch uses a 43mm stainless steel case, ear-shaped pushers and a quartz Seiko 8T61 chronograph movement.
- Pre-orders open on 6 October 2026, with UK pricing at £510 and deliveries expected from November.
A concept panda dial made literal
The phrase panda chronograph usually means a white dial with black subdials, a layout loved for its contrast and motorsport-adjacent clarity.
Designer Kiyotaka Sakai has taken that shorthand at face value.
Here, the chronograph counters are shaped like the dark markings around a panda’s eyes, while a nose and mouth sit beneath the central hands.

The pushers add another layer of character, placed at 11 and 1 o’clock so they read visually as ears rather than conventional stopwatch controls.
It’s a small shift in position that changes the whole personality of the watch, moving it away from a standard chronograph silhouette and closer to a wearable character object.
White and pink versions with deep-cut details
The limited edition will be offered in two dial colours, with the white version closest to the initial concept and a new pink edition joining it for production.

The pink tone nods to baby pandas, which are pink before their familiar black-and-white coat develops.
Seiko hasn’t stopped at the dial artwork.
The outer timing scale has been renamed the Sasameter, with sasa meaning bamboo in Japanese, a neat linguistic touch that keeps the theme connected to the panda’s diet.

Turn the watch over and the caseback continues the idea, using striping to evoke the animal’s shoulders and adding a three-dimensional tail near the bottom.
It’s the kind of detail that will either win someone over immediately or confirm that this isn’t their sort of Seiko, which is exactly the point of a project like this.
Quartz makes the odd layout possible
The Panda Chronograph is not a small watch, measuring 43mm across and 14.6mm thick.

That scale suits the joke, given the giant panda inspiration, but it also gives the design enough room to make its unusual architecture legible.
Inside is Seiko’s calibre 8T61, a quartz chronograph movement rated to an accuracy of plus or minus 15 seconds per month.
The movement choice is practical rather than disappointing.

With the chronograph pushers moved up to the top of the case, a conventional mechanical layout would have been considerably more complicated, while quartz keeps the watch accessible and consistent with the playful brief.
The watch is fitted to a matching leather strap in white or pink, each with suede-like panels to support the soft, character-led design.
Limited numbers and pre-order timing
Production is capped at 5,000 pieces across both versions.

The white HHK001 will be made in 3,000 examples, while the pink HHK002 is limited to 2,000 pieces.
UK pricing is set at £510, with European pricing listed at €590.
Pre-orders open on 6 October 2026, and deliveries are expected to begin in November.
That pricing puts the watch in a space where Seiko collectors, design-watch fans and anyone who missed out on previous characterful limited editions may all be paying attention.

The Seiko Power Design Project Panda Chronograph won’t be for the collector who wants restraint above all else, but that’s its charm.
It shows Seiko at its most self-aware, turning a familiar chronograph nickname into a fully realised object with enough wit, specificity and affordability to make it more than a novelty.
