Seiko Gives the 5 Sports Field GMT an Earthier Look

Seiko’s 5 Sports Field GMT has always made sense as a practical, everyday travel watch rather than a delicate traveller’s accessory.

Now the line feels more at home in its own skin, with two new dial colours that lean into the field-watch brief instead of simply repeating the usual black-dial formula.

The new HDB001 and HDB002 bring olive green and khaki beige into the collection, keeping the same steel case, fixed 24-hour bezel and automatic GMT movement that made the earlier models appealing at the accessible end of the market.

The Seiko 5 Sports collection has grown well beyond its SKX-inspired beginnings, with field watches, cleaner everyday pieces and travel-focused GMT models now sitting under the same broad umbrella.

These two additions feel especially well matched to the Field GMT format.

The HDB001 uses a dark olive green dial, while the HDB002 goes for a khaki beige finish.

Both dials retain the matte, grained texture of the existing Field GMT layout, with raised luminous markers, a framed date window at 3 o’clock and an inner 13-to-24-hour scale.

The red-toned GMT hand adds a useful contrast against both colours, while also keeping the watch visually close to the adventure-watch territory it’s clearly meant to occupy.

A compact steel case with everyday travel utility

The case dimensions remain unchanged, which is good news for anyone who liked the proportions of the earlier black-dial Field GMT models.

At 39.4mm across, 13.6mm thick and 47.9mm lug to lug, the watch sits in a compact middle ground that should work for a wide range of wrists.

The stainless steel case combines brushed and polished surfaces, with a fixed radially brushed bezel carrying a 24-hour scale.

That fixed bezel is central to the character of the watch, giving it a more land-based travel-watch feel than Seiko’s dive-influenced GMT models.

A curved Hardlex crystal sits over the dial, and water resistance is rated to 100 metres.

The watches are fitted to a brushed five-link stainless steel bracelet with a three-fold clasp and secure lock.

The 4R34 keeps the GMT function accessible

Inside is Seiko’s calibre 4R34, the automatic GMT movement derived from the familiar 4R platform.

It runs at 21,600 vibrations per hour, uses 24 jewels and offers around 41 hours of power reserve.

The GMT function is an office-style setup, meaning the 24-hour hand is independently adjustable in one-hour increments.

For frequent flyers who prefer a jumping local hour hand, that distinction matters.

For many everyday wearers tracking another time zone from home or work, it remains a useful and affordable implementation.
