Panerai’s latest high-complication Luminor leans into mechanics rather than decoration.
The Luminor Tourbillon PAM01784 places a skeletonised hand-wound calibre inside a 47 mm Grade 5 titanium case, pairing the brand’s naval design language with a 30-second horizontal tourbillon, GMT functionality and a six-day power reserve.
It’s a serious technical piece, but it still reads unmistakably as a Panerai.

At a glance
- Panerai has introduced the Luminor Tourbillon PAM01784 with an openworked hand-wound movement.
- The watch features a 30-second horizontal tourbillon, GMT display and six-day power reserve.
- It is priced at €160,000 including taxes and US$155,100 before sales taxes.
A skeletonised Luminor with real mechanical theatre
The PAM01784 is built around visibility, with the movement forming much of the watch’s visual architecture.
Instead of using a conventional dial plate, Panerai has mounted the numerals and hour markers on the rehaut, leaving the gear train, barrels and tourbillon exposed beneath the hands.
The openworked construction is not just a display of empty space.

A grid motif runs across the mechanism, referencing the net barriers once placed below naval vessels and the Italian Navy frogmen who navigated through them during underwater missions.
Orange accents highlight the GMT, AM/PM and power reserve indications, while Super-LumiNova keeps the display legible in low light.
A domed sapphire crystal sits above the dial, giving the watch a slightly vintage profile while shifting the appearance of the numerals and mechanics as the viewing angle changes.

The P.2005/T calibre and its 30-second tourbillon
Inside is Panerai’s P.2005/T calibre, a skeletonised hand-wound movement measuring 10.05 mm thick.
The calibre is made from 277 components and 31 jewels, runs at 4 Hz, and uses a Glucydur balance with Incabloc shock protection.
Its blue Grade 5 titanium bridges and plates reduce weight while visually tying the movement to the case material.

The tourbillon is the mechanical centrepiece.
Rather than completing one rotation every 60 seconds like many traditional tourbillons, the cage rotates once every 30 seconds and turns on an axis perpendicular to that of the balance.
This horizontal layout is designed to address rate variation caused by gravity, and the brand says assembling the cage takes seven times longer than assembling a simple movement.

The six-day reserve comes from three spring barrels connected in series, using a combined mainspring length of 1.36 metres.
The movement can be fully wound with 68 turns of the crown, while a patented barrel arrangement places the third barrel laterally beside the other two without increasing the calibre’s overall thickness.
GMT functionality for travel, not just display
The GMT system is built for practical use rather than ornamental complication stacking.

The local hour hand can be adjusted forwards or backwards in one-hour increments without stopping the watch and without disturbing the GMT hand.
Home time remains visible through a 12-hour GMT hand and a 24-hour indication, while the local-time setting is linked to the date.
When travel isn’t on the agenda, the local and home-time hands can be aligned for a cleaner reading.

At 9 o’clock, the small seconds display incorporates a tourbillon indicator rotating at the same speed as the cage.
The angular power reserve display follows the outer curve of the movement and relies on a dedicated mechanism with more than 20 components, including a miniature ball differential with three balls measuring just 0.5 mm each.
Titanium case, straps and presentation
The 47 mm case is made from brushed Grade 5 titanium with polished surfaces and Panerai’s signature crown-protecting bridge.

Grade 5 titanium is lighter and harder than stainless steel, and its use across the case, bridges and plates helps keep the watch to approximately 105 grams.
Water resistance is rated to 10 bar, equivalent to 100 metres or 330 feet.
The PAM01784 is supplied on a blue alligator leather strap with a titanium adjustable buckle, with a second blue rubber strap and pin buckle included.

It is presented in a blue-finished cherry wood box with a screwdriver for changing the buckle.
