Panerai Marks a Century in Florence With Immersion and Two Luminor Firenze Editions

Panerai’s connection to Florence has always been more than a line in the company history.

The city shaped the brand’s early identity, from precision instruments and naval commissions to the enduring image of its Piazza San Giovanni boutique, and that relationship is now being brought into focus with an immersive exhibition at the Museo Marino Marini.

To mark 100 years of the historic Florentine boutique, Panerai has also introduced two limited-edition Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni references that translate the anniversary into something tangible on the wrist.

Florence as Panerai’s spiritual home

For many collectors, Panerai’s Florence story is fixed in one instantly recognisable image of the old Orologeria Svizzera shopfront, with its hand-painted signage and formal black-and-white presence.

That storefront, opened in 1926, is only one side of a more complex family enterprise.

Maria Panerai managed the retail operation, where pocket watches and table clocks reflected the tastes and needs of the period, while Giuseppe Panerai developed instruments and watches for the Italian Navy under military secrecy.

That naval work remained largely hidden from public view until 1993, which helps explain why Panerai’s modern collector culture has such an unusual blend of mythology, technical history and late-discovered archival depth.

Inside the Immersion exhibition

Staged at the Museo Marino Marini, Immersion is designed as a fuller encounter with Panerai rather than a conventional anniversary display.

The exhibition brings together historic artifacts, watches, instruments, documents and other material connected to the brand’s identity across military service, diving, maritime culture and Florentine craftsmanship.

It also plays an important role for a brand that doesn’t yet have a permanent public museum, giving collectors and visitors a rare opportunity to see key objects from Panerai’s history in one place.

The concept is not purely archival.

Alongside the historical pieces, Panerai has used the exhibition to show contemporary materials and calibres, making the connection between the old military-instrument maker and the modern watch brand more direct.

The Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni anniversary watches

Panerai’s anniversary watches are the Luminor Firenze 8 Giorni PAM01734 and PAM01794, both using the familiar 44mm Luminor case and the manually wound P.5000 calibre with an eight-day power reserve.

The watches take inspiration from the Ref. 6152/1, one of the key historical Panerai references associated with the brand’s naval era.

A rare prototype adds further texture to the story, with tone-on-tone Panerai Firenze engraving on the dial and a crown bridge that had been hand-filed to improve grip for naval operators wearing gloves.

The new limited editions don’t reproduce that crown-bridge modification, but they do use dial engraving to give the Firenze theme a quieter, more collector-focused presence.

PAM01734 is the more exclusive of the two, with a 44mm Platinumtech case, a green circular-brushed dial and a production run of 100 pieces.

PAM01794 takes the idea into polished steel with an anthracite circular-brushed dial and a larger run of 1,000 pieces.

Both watches use Panerai’s sandwich-style dial construction, Super-LumiNova Arabic numerals and hour markers, and pencil-style hands, with gold-tone hands on the platinum model and blue hands on the steel model.

The straps bring Florence into the detailing as well, with calf leather hot-stamped with a motif inspired by the Florentine lily and an additional caoutchouc strap supplied with each model.

Panerai’s Florence anniversary works because it doesn’t try to separate the city, the watches and the naval history into neat compartments.

Immersion gives the brand’s archive a physical setting, while the two Luminor Firenze editions offer collectors a wearable reminder that Panerai’s identity was forged as much in Florence as it was at sea.
