Mercedes-AMG’s recent performance strategy has been one of the more debated shifts in the enthusiast world, especially after the C63 moved away from V8 power.
Now there’s a tangible sign that the door hasn’t been closed for good.
A new 4.0-litre V8 has appeared in the updated Mercedes-Benz S580, and while it’s serving a luxury brief for now, its specification makes it far more interesting than a routine powertrain update.

At a glance
- Mercedes-Benz has introduced a new flat-plane-crank 4.0-litre V8 in the updated S580.
- The engine produces 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, with a crank design intended to help it rev more freely.
- AMG is evaluating the engine’s potential, raising the possibility of future V8-powered C63 and E63 models.
The new V8 starts life in the S580
The key development is the S580’s new 4.0-litre V8, which uses a flat-plane crank rather than a more conventional cross-plane layout.
In its current form, the engine makes 530 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, numbers that place it comfortably in high-performance territory even before AMG has had its turn.
The S-Class application matters because Mercedes-Benz has to prove the engine can deliver refinement, durability and smoothness in one of its most demanding luxury cars.

If it can satisfy that brief, it becomes a far more convincing candidate for performance duty elsewhere in the range.
Why the flat-plane crank matters
A flat-plane crank reduces rotational mass, which can help an engine respond more sharply and rev with greater urgency.
That’s a meaningful detail for AMG, where character is as important as output.

The best AMG V8s have never been defined by numbers alone, but by the way they deliver torque, sound and theatre without losing the everyday usability that made them so widely loved.
A flat-plane layout could give a future AMG V8 a more eager, motorsport-influenced edge, provided Mercedes can preserve the sophistication expected from the brand.
AMG is watching before committing
Mercedes board member Mathias Geisen has made it clear that the company is not rushing the engine straight into AMG models.

“One step after the other. First we have to make sure we have a very nice and sophisticated V-8, and of course we now look into market demand and have some plans of where else to use it,” Geisen said.
That wording is cautious, but it’s also notable.
Mercedes-Benz isn’t presenting the engine as a one-car technical exercise, and AMG’s interest suggests there is at least a pathway for wider performance use.

For enthusiasts, the obvious candidates are the C63 and E63.
The C63 in particular has faced scrutiny since its move to a four-cylinder hybrid setup, a technically impressive package that hasn’t carried the same emotional pull as its V8 predecessors.
An E63 with V8 power would also sit more naturally in the lineage of AMG super sedans, where effortless thrust and long-distance authority have always been part of the appeal.

There’s no confirmed launch timeline, model announcement or production plan for V8-powered AMG C63 or E63 variants yet.
Still, the arrival of this engine changes the conversation from wishful thinking to something more credible, and for AMG loyalists, that alone is enough to make the next move from Mercedes-Benz worth watching.
